Hi all,

We haven't posted in awhile, so I thot we could share some recent shots from the backyard...

Our Song Sparrows were gone for awhile... but they're back now, and we're very glad about it:

The Bluejays have returned also:

The Titmice are year-round residents here:

This is the female of our Red-bellied Woodpecker pair:

A male Downy Woodpecker:

A male Northern Cardinal:

And our Bluebird pair (Mr.B & Missy) who are busy feeding their first brood of the season... 5 healthy chicks still in the nestbox and due to fledge on or about April 26th.

Wonderful pictures. I just visited your entire album. We share the same birds with the exception of the Red Headed Woodpecker. I have never seen him here.

Your photos really are such a treat! My goodness, they just take my breath away. Thank you so much for sharing them with us. I think that the Titmouse one is my fav of the bunch. I know it's hard to get such a terrific shot of those guys.

Your pictures are wonderful, as always. I'm curious about something though. It seems they are always posing on the same two pieces of dead wood. Do you put mealworms onto the wood to attract them there, or do they just prefer those as perching spots?

Thanks terrene, We provide a lot of supplements to their ample insect diet... mealworms, suet nuggets, raisins, and scrambled egg. They eat all of these food sources daily and they are all vital and healthy birds. We also help to eliminate all the major safety hazards with safe housing, and (mostly passive) predator control. Missy and Mr.B have successfully fledged 41 baby blues so far over 3 seasons, and we only know of 1 lost to the wild. She is about finished building her 3rd nest of the 2010 season (her 9th) in our box. They currently have 11 fledglings in the trees, and we are on egg-watch for the 3rd nest as I write this. It's hard not to be proud of this precious and prolific pair. But we know they are not our birds... we are just happy to be their people. Thanks everyone, terrene - We last saw Mr.B on Nov 29th. We never found any evidence of his demise, but he had been with us everyday for over 4 years and we believe he lived a long a natural life. He fathered 49 successful fledglings with Missy and we will never forget him. I've posted a special photo gallery in his memory here: http://kenn3d.smugmug.com/Nature/MrB/15996467_WUse9#1125423915_HTqVX Missy and Ben are a bonded pair now. Ben arrived here about Dec 12th and began courting her right away. They just fledged 5 babies from their first nest together, and Missy has 6 blue eggs under incubation in their 2nd nest as I write this. Your pics are all really nice, but I just love that Blue jay shot! The Blue jay along with the pink buds in the background and the young Redbud leaves make a lovely composition. The song sparrow also looks perfectly posed on the branch.

Glad to hear that Mr. B and Missy have raised 5 healthy nestlings (so far)!

Thanks all for the nice comments. :)

For terrene and all the other Bluebird lovers here, we are very happy to report that all 5 of Missy and Mr.B's first brood did fledge successfully on the morning of April 27th.
