Fledglings on deck!

For the past several days our baby blues have been perching in the redbud tree each morning:

This is only about 20ft or so from the deck where Missy and Mr.B have been carrying mealworms up to feed them:

This morning BabyBoyBlue (the first chick out of the box) finally made it down to the deck himself:

And decided to take his first bath not 6ft from my lens. I had to zoom back a bit to capture this darling scene:

Later in the morning the rest gradually came down to the rail too and all got fed mealworms by Missy and Mr.B, but we expect they will soon be dining at the worm bowl unassisted.

How adorable! My tres. won't come out of the box. They have been peeking for 3 days. I have never seen a baby up close out of the box. As soon as they fledge, they hit the skies and never look back. I love the one sitting on the box with his mouth wide open...that is precious. Thanks for posting! Karen

How close was I to these fledglings? As close as I can auto focus with a 300mm f/2.8 lens, which is about 8 feet. They got so used to me bringing the meal worms that they would fly right up to the feeder while I was putting them out. I have had them actually brush my arm. Of course, I don't have my camera in my hand and it wouldn't do me much good if I did, since I can't auto focus that close. I usually move to about 10 feet and fire away. They tend to ignore me. It's hard not to get a pretty shot of a bluebird, especially if it is sitting still. They are simply photogenic. I have this fancy equipment so I try to get them in action and catch them doing unusual things or get close ups that allow us to see them better than we do in real time. Their individual feathers, for example, are very beautiful, but they usually move so fast we don't get the chance to see and appreciate them. And can you imagine seeing your reflection in his eye? Here's a shot I like from a few days ago. It has a lot going on in it. It was taken when Papa was starting to chase the fledglings out of the yard. In the center is a HOSP that was trying to steal a meal worm. Papa is coming in from our position to chase the HOSP. One of the fledglings senses Papa is coming and moves to get out of the way. After he hits the HOSP, Papa continues on and chases the fledgling for good measure. Thanks for all the kind comments. Dave

Debbie 321 Ok debbie you made me go look up the definition of a SLR, didn't like it, Anyway there are two types of cameras: One is a point and shoot,they are small, limited in accessories, and you can not change the lens on them, though some will zoom out there quiet far and some you can get add on lens, generally a lens that screws on the end of the camera lens, generally enlarging the image to twice the size. They are cost effective and some are really good, I don't have one but have been thinking of getting a good cheap one to take landscape pictures. The other one an SLR, is a Single reflex Camera, that's the official definition, basically what you see through the viewfinder is what you get. The image comes through the lens and is bounced off a mirror, when you look through the view finder you actually see the mirror, and what you see is what you get. I've always consider an SLR as being a camera that you can take the lens off and put on another lens, but under the definition there are some point and shoot that could be consider an SLR. Most SLR's you can buy a bunch of accessories for them. The only thing about them though is they cost about 3-4 times the cost of a point and shoot. I hope that explain a little about what an SLR is. Let me add there are some remote controls that use the same technology as a TV remote, an IR light, which you can't see. You have to point the remote at the camera as you do a TV, They are ok for cameras when your looking at the front of camera, but are a waste of money if you've got the camera pointed out a window, and your behind the camera. Almost impossible to get that IR beam to reflect off of something and hit the camera sensor. That's something I learned the hard way, believe me I tried positioning mirrors in front of the camera, never could get it just right. Keith

My phoebes had skipped a year of nesting in their usual place (above the porch light fixture near my office door). My mirror set-up had scared them away. I should have realized that birds do not "like" mirrors -- but I didn't think about it at the time. I did see a bird pecking all day at the mirror, looking behind it, then pecking angrily at it when seeing the "intruder" again. That bird came back the next day to peck at the mirror again. I felt sorry for him wasting his time. But, I didn't think about the phoebes reaction being the same. So, they never nested there last year. I removed the mirror, but they still did not return to nest there this spring. Instead, they nested on another side of the house -- under our raised deck (same as last year). But, after the 1st brood was fledged -- THEY MOVED BACK TO THEIR OLD NESTING SPOT! So, the phoebes apparently got fed up with the disturbances created by our toy poodle (who is let out onto our raised deck several times a day.) The poodle would be walking directly over their nest, and possibly pissing over their nest. The nest building started May 25, 2021 and completed on the 30th or 31st. The mother was sitting on the nest on May 31, and there were 2 eggs in the nest. So, the first egg was likely delivered on May 30. By June 3, there were 5 eggs. All the eggs hatched on June 17 -- so, exactly 2 weeks after the last egg was laid. Interesting that all eggs hatched on the same day, even though each egg was laid a day apart. When I peeked, all the shells were gone. So, even tho I didn't see it, I assume that the parents removed all the egg shells. I also see the parents flying away with baby-bird poop. The poop looks like worms, and the parents carry it away from the nest. They either drop it or eat it (it is undigested food). Today is June 23, and the parents are often very busy bringing food. The bay birds are still too small to see without using a mirror over the nest. Here is a link to a very interesting article from 1937, detailing the observations of nesting habits of phoebes as studied over a 3-yr period. A few interesting details: Female does all the nest building. Incubation starts at varying times - sometimes after 3rd egg, sometimes after 4th, sometimes after 5th. The male apparently does none of the incubation. After fledging, the young birds remain close to the nest, getting farther way as the days pass. Both parents still feed the young after they fledge -- feeding them for periods of up to 18 days. Reliance on the parents gradually decreases. Hi all,

The babies have been coming to the deck more and more, and we're getting a lot of good opportunities now to get those longed-for closeups. It was sunny this morning when the whole family showed up, so I thought I could share just a few more photos:

As you can see, Mr.B continues to be a model father, feeding the chicks and Missy both throughout the day. And Missy now has 4 pretty blue eggs in her second nest. So we're anxious to see whether she lays a fifth, or begins her incubation on Mother's Day.

Just when I thought your pics couldn't get any better, they DO!!! You really should consider entering them in a national bird photo contest...capturing these blues on camera since the fledging, must be a rare opportunity!

We're so really proud our baby blues, and love taking their pictures.

They've finally started coming to the worm bowl and eating on their own, and we're really tickled to watch them.:)

They see their parents aren't afraid of us and come really close without any fear... it's wonderful!

Hi all,

Sorry to resurrect this aging thread, but I wanted to add a few new photos here. Missy has been incubating 5 beautiful blue eggs since Mother's Day, so hopefully we will have some new hatchlings in the box soon. Meanwhile we continue to enjoy the first brood coming to the deck everyday and I just wanted to share a few more shots of them before their father chases them off.

They're feeding themselves now mostly, but it seems Mr.B still has a soft spot when they gape at him:

I know we're softies too, but we just can't resist these precious little birds:

When they empty the worm bowl we put it away until the next feeding. And if they arrive again before the worms do, it's really funny to see them looking for that bowl! :)

It's hard to believe the second clutch will be hatching in about a week. We wonder if these fledgings will still be around when the next bunch leaves the nest!

Believe me Nina, it's not the camera! I have one,even a more updated version, and mine aren't even close to Kenn's. LOL (It must be the lens he adds to the camera. (wink)

Kenn your babies are just so beautiful. Im so glad Blues have blessed you with their nestings again this year. That way we all get to enjoy your beautiful photos too! LOL...Glad to hear that they trust you and aren't scared of you. My babies havent shown up at the mealworm pan yet but we saw some yesterday chasing dad on the fence. I didnt see them today. So i hope soon i can get some pics of ours. We had one egg not hatch and one chick didnt make it but we beleive we have three out of five still around. I just have to wait till they come to the mealies. Waiting is HARD :-)
