Feeder type?

I am wondering if anyone here has used one of these feeders for whole peanuts (wreath peanut feeder) and if so what are your thoughts? They are going on sale on Friday locally but I don't want to buy another feeder that the birds just simply don't like.

Thanks

I got a peanut feeder for a gift. A few birds got some peanuts, but mostly the squirrels took them all, so I stopped stocking it. If you have a lot of squirrels in the area, I wouldn't bother.

i also was given a wreath for x-mas one year but instead of squirrels it was the magpies and scrub jays that tore it apart in no time

What types of containers are these? I'm just a little confused why you need both the container and the liner... Is this going to be an inground pond? That'll make some difference in your climate, but probably not much. But it needs some consideration none the less. In a 100 gallon pond, I'd say you can get away with a pretty small pump. 200 gallons per hour (will this be led up a slope, used for a fountain, or simply recirculating the water?) will be enough to turn the water over twice per hour, which is the reccommended minimum for proper filtration. I would not go above a 400 gph pump, as it will cause too much current for your fishes and plants to be comfortable. A pond CAN be a self contained environment, meaning, you can put a sponge filter on (most small pumps come with a small sponge attatched to the intake which will be adequate), I've even heard of small ponds not having not having any mechanical filtration, when they are planted heavily with oxygenating plants and scarcely populated with fish and wild life. A pond that size, I would not put in commets or other fishes that can grow large. Commets are set to grow up to a foot in length and your pond would be very uncomfortable for them to keep them healthy. The fancy goldfishes, however, could be very happy there if you get a smaller variety. The variety of fish you expect to keep in winter, will depend on how cool the water gets - and this is where inground or above ground can play a part. Good luck with your pond, Nancy is right, it can be extremely addicting!

Heres what I do every year, after they are dried I do cut the stem down to about 1/2 inch and cut off the roots, then I wrap each one in newspaper and store in a cool dry place. I do check them about every 6-8 weeks to make sure none have gotten soft. Hope that helps. Your very lucky to have gotten so many. Christine

It's interesting to me that those who design feeders to be sold don't take into consideration what design(s) work(s). They keep making junk because we keep buying it. In my opinion, there are three big no-no's in hummingbird feeders. 1) The holes through which the juice is accessed must be small: just big enough for the hummers and no more. 2) The distance from the top of the juice to the feeder hole needs to be too long for wasps and bees, but short enough for hummers to get access. 3) The feeder MUST NOT leak. Over the years I have fed thousands upon thousands of hummers.

Over the course of 35 years of Hummer watching and feeding, i've tried more feeders than I care to mention. I buy hummer feeders like some women buy clothes and shoes. I have several Hummzingers as well and like you even though they came to the saucers, it was the Perky Pets with perches that has been their choice. Family and friends have given me an assortment of those fancy blown glass, glass flowers, etc. Those are pretty much useless in my garden. They hang out in the attic with the others. I hang the smaller PP's on fishing line from a hook underneath the eaves of my house close to the windows. Their favorite one is the one at the dining room window. I can walk into any room and see hummers from March til November when they leave me for the winter. I've never had a problem with ants getting on the ones on the fishing line and it saves the ant cups for the other feeders.

taigen,
I do own a peanut feeder which does get used by the Woodpeckers and Nuthatches, but it holds shelled peanuts. The only birds here that seem to take the whole peanuts in the shells are the Blue Jays, and they seem to prefer them out in a tray or saucer type feeder.
I included a link to show a pic of the peanut feeder I believe you are referring to.

Oops..meant to say that the linked pic is of a Blue Jay at the type of feeder you are referring to. :o) Not sure which other birds would use it.

Thanks everyone...yes that is the feeder I am looking at. I feed the jays right now out of an old ashtray which the grey squirrels also frequent. I thought with the wreath I could hand it from the clothesline or something and the squirrels would have a harder time...although I don't mind them too much, they do have a funny personality!
It is going on sale for $11.99 so not too bad, I just didn't think a bird would land on it but your photo shows me they do haha
I also have the shelled peanut feeder (black tube with pencil size holes in it) and not one bird goes to it, that is why I wondered with this one.
Thanks again.

The blue jays in my area love the wreath feeder but so do the squirrels. The wreath feeder is the only feeder in my yard that the starlings don't mess with, aside from the finch feeder. The grackles hit it occasionally but it's mainly the blue jays. Red bellies, downies, nuthatches, and titmice will either circle around the wreath looking for a stray loose peanut or else peck away at a shell to break it open. If you like blue jays and you can keep the squirrels at bay, I'd recommend the wreath feeder.
