Crows can even be stately when it suits them.

but sometimes they just can't resist expressing their opionion.

I mentioned a fat tan beetle with dark stripes earlier. I found some pics online and it was either a colorado potato beetle or a false one. The wikipedia page says they also like tomatoes and eggplants: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colorado_potato_beetle I think the green frog changed into a gray frog later in the day. Either that or there is more than one frog on the plant. Thanks Dave, I'll know how the eggplant tastes tomorrow evening (my wife has eggplant parmigiana on the menu). The black beauty was still shiny when I picked it so I guess it still wasn't fully ripened yet. I'll probably pick another one tomorrow which is a pretty good size and do a taste test. There are still a bunch of black beauties of different size on the plant so we're not worried about increasing production, but we'll pick early if there is a big difference in taste. Keep up the faith fauzie, give your baby time and I'm sure she'll grow. I've been adding some soluble fertilizer in the watering can every couple of days to make sure the fruit have enough nutrients to grow well too.

Thank you so much for the help and photos--your kitchens are beautiful!----my head has been spinning thinking about all of this! I can picture the combination working. Can you tell me if you think this combination would work better/worse: Antique perimeter w/black honed, antique island w/wood, cherry wet bar/carrara marble? I'm guessing it's an OK combo no matter how it's put together, but I guess I'm thinking that the cherry on the island instead of the wet bar makes it feel more grounded since it's in the middle? Does it matter either way?

I am not sure..... On the one hand I think it would look perfectly nice. But then I read Ellendi and started to think maybe she is right. So then I searched my pics to see white kitchens with dark wood (similar to walnut) islands and now I see what she means. But, what do you like? Because with enough light the kitchen would be beautiful with dark counters on island and perimeter. I also included an picture with Costa Esmeralda. That is a lovely granite too. The cool thing is that you might find a remnant in white marble, or typhoon bordeaux or maybe Costa Esmeralda or even white river that might be a fun balance to the kitchen. ~boxer The perimeter looks like Costa Esmeralda Costa Esmeralda

Dark cherry island..black countertop too dark?

Thank you, thank you! I have been so rude not getting back here to update. Distracted by picking out lights for a whole house is overwhelming me and starting to really drive me crazy. But on a positive note I took all of your good advice and made progress on the countertop front. I went to the stone place in our town. They had a small sample of the London Sky. It was really beautiful and looked a lot like Marble. A better choice than a lot of quartz that I have looked at. But it was a little too gray for my white cabinets. i went back to the brushed via lactea slabs with my dark cherry door in hand and try as I might not to I had to admit that it was too dark. I hated that because I adored this brushed stone and it is my first choice but I have to listen to the good advice I got here. Sometimes I think the folks here know more than the professional ids. then I found two quartz samples that I really liked all while my granite gal told me that they had some Taj Mahal that I could look at since I had never seen it in person. My eyes must have lit up and she warned me that it will be higher than my via lactea. I was excited about seeing it anyway. just for the heck of it I asked her if she had any Imperial Danby since I loved the slab shown up thread...knowing I really could not choose it. But, still I felt like I needed to see it if she had it. She told me no that she didn’t and that knowing me it was a good thing not to fall for something I should not have. so, my kd and my granite gal and I took the hike out to the Taj Mahal with my door samples and the 2 quartzes I liked in hand. here is the result. The Taj Mahal is beautiful. I love it. Now if only I can justify the $$. Waiting for the price. Thank you all so much.

Crows with snow on their bills from digging for birdseed. Got milk?

And a crow watching the turkey display from a safe perch, looking both amazed and amused. What are those ridiculous birds doing now?

Another mostly black and beautiful bird is the Common Grackle. Voracious appetite but can be counted on to eat caterpillars and grubs as well.

I love seeing the threat posture with the bill straight up in the air.

Is that what they are doing? I thought it was weird that grackles often show up in my yard and point their head into the sky. I am thinking they may be posturing against the other grackles.

I read somewhere that this is a male to male threat posture and I see it here a lot. Sometimes combined with a swelling up of the feathers and a creaking call, almost like a ritual belch. None of them ever seem to attack the other so I guess it works.

A few weeks ago I was watching a male grackle at the suet feeder when a second male showed up and pointed its bill up, maybe trying to take over the suet. Grackle number one was smaller but pointed its bill up then swelled up and creaked. It must have been very impressive because grackle number two left without any suet.
