Try your local pet store. Petco sells them here locally for 10 dollars for 500. They usually keep them in stock.

There is apparently a nation-wide shortage. Even our local pet store supply of mealies is dwindling, so I've been feeding wax worms to my family of five. They absolutely LOVE them. They're softer and more grub-like. They should be creamy yellow colored - black or brown are dead and should be tossed. They can be kept in the fridge at about 45 degrees (the door, I've heard is a good spot), but I use mine fast enough that I just keep them at room temp. They are a bit more expensive than mealworms, but they're larger and have a higher fat content, so you can put out about half the amount you usually would in mealies and it should fill their bottomless bellies. Wax worms are popular with fishermen, so you can find them both at pet stores and bait shops. Good luck!

Thanks Mullipuff, but I know all to well how the blues, chickadees, woodpeckers, nuthatches, robins love wax worms. I have been feeding them waxworms for years. Yes, they are expensive and the redbellied woodpecker will fly into the feeder and take all of them in one sitting, he is feeding babies too and he will take 10 or so at a time!!!

I cleaned out a bait shop and the owner was mad at me because some fishermen came in to buy waxworms and I took all of them. He gives me a discount because I feed the blues. Even the bait stores are having problems keeping waxworms in the shop. I guess the blues will have to do it the old fashion way.....hunt for bugs all by themselves :)

LOL, you must have missed the meal worm shortage thread. Yep, a nation wide shortage and I can't tell you how happy I am to have about 7,000 right now. My supplier, a local Wild Bird Centers, doesn't buy hers through the regular suppliers and she is still able to get around twelve orders of 5,000 every week. Needless to say, she won't tell me who that supplier is.

My only suggestion would be your local Petco/Petsmart. Unfortunately, they are probably feeling the effects by now, too. The GOOD news is that the fledglings don't really "need" them and will be fine w/o them till the shortage is over.

I am still able to get them at my WBU, thankfully. They haven't mentioned a shortage. I just bought 1,000 a couple days ago. My 5 babies are 14 days old now, and will probably fledge soon. But the parents will probably just start all over again here in my yard, since it is safe (now that all the neighborhood cats have been taken care of).

One thing I have noticed, no matter how generous and how often I put out the worms, the parents still work diligently finding other food to feed their young. I do supplement with raisins, which they always eat .... well the male will eat them, but I've never seen the female go for them.
