Help with nest ID??

Hi guys, I need help with a nest ID. I have some Giant Arborvitae in my yard, and I found this nest in one of them this morning. I know that I frequently see Mourning Dove, Robins, Cardinals, Starlings (grrr) in them. Is this a Cardinal nest?

There now, let's try that link and see if it works. Of all of the forums that I visit, this one is the hardest one to upload pictures to. It gets frustrating, and I wonder why it has to be so hard.

Hi bandjzmom.

Since you use Photobucket for your pictures, follow this procedure.

Go back to your photobucket album.

Move your cursor over the picture that you want.

You will now see that Email & IM, Direct Link, HTML Code, and IMG Code came up.

Select HTML Code. Copy it to your clipboard. Sometimes Photobucket will do it automatically copy it for you and sometimes it doesn't. Just to be on the safe side, you copy it.

Come back to the forum or any other forum and paste what you copied in Photobucket.

It should come up in the message. Try it.

Either bald-faced hornets or the sort of yellowjackets which make aerial nests. In either case, it looks as if it's high enough to be out of the way, thus not a problem. If so, you can leave it be until the colony dies, most likely by November or December. At that time you can either remove the nest or leave it be. In the latter instance, the nest will gradually disintegrate.

Ow, this is sad....picture isn't pretty I found a nest in my yard that had come down from a maple tree. The nest is made mostly of grass and mud, and was sitting firmly on a branch. In/under the nest was a nestling that looked to have been attacked before the nest was knocked out. I've seen robin fledgelings hopping about the yard for the past couple of weeks, so I'm wondering if anybody can ID the nestling assuming it's not a robin? Thanks, vince

I think I've solved the mystery! I think it's a warbling vireo. I don't think they've been to our property before....but who knows for sure. They are very secretive. Our 35 acres has exploded with growth this year. I think it's because of the severe winter we had, followed by an incredibly wet spring. So much fun getting a new bird around here! Last year, I started hearing a northern parula, and I'm still hearing it. I've googled the warbling vireo's nest and some of the images look just like mine. Woohoo!!

Looks exactly like a yellow jacket nest. Yes, the cells are very small...and the larvae are very small, too. Skunks are just one of the animals that commonly dig up these nests. Yes, they get stung plenty, but they don't care. ;-)

Thanks beezee! I will try that. I wonder why we can't just upload the pics from our own computer picture files. That would be so much easier.
