Warblers, goslings, eagle, etc

We slept in the screen tent again last night-the stars were so clear

This morning the male Yellow Warbler was in our Tulip Poplar tree. I could hear his "Sweet, sweet, sweet-am I very sweet?"

Yesterday we went to Minor Clark Fish Hatchery and saw Giant Canada Goose goslings

Northern Rough-winged Swallows were sparring over the breeding ponds, and one of them landed

Despite my saying I wouldn't get off the trail, I waded into deep, tick-infested grass just to get blurry, shadowy photos of a Common Yellowthroat stoutly defending his territory with a "wi-che-ty, wi-che-ty, wi-che-ty"

Beautiful pictures Rachel and you sleep outdoor that's great. I wish you lots of beautiful skies!

At my place the lakes are finally clear of ice, many birds are here now but not the warblers neither the hummingbirds and flycatchers.

Hi LFRJ... I wish I could give you some definitive answers, but I have had geese for just over a year and so have limited experience with tricky questions. My feeling is that you will have to take your cue from the geese themselves. What would happen if you released them for a trial run at free ranging? If they get along then, great. Although this could change with the breeding season. I had two geese and a gander last year... so there was never any problem. But I did notice that when my Buff had an injured foot and I kept her in for a number of days, she was most unhappy and so were the other two. They called back and forth all day long. I don't think they will be happy in separate boxes. They are very social creatures. I'd say your best bet is likely to make two good-sized nest boxes, one for each pair... or better yet, one large one with two goose-doors and a partition that can be removed. This would give you the flexibility to adapt to the situation as it develops. My geese - the gander is gone now but I still have the two geese and nine goslings - sleep in an 8' x 8' section of the poultry house. "They" say geese need about 7 -8 square feet per adult... so mine are a tad overcrowded, but most of them are young and all but two of the goslings will be culled this fall. My geese come willingly when I call them and march in to their supper and bed to my rendition of "Row, row, row your boat" -- which has been their travelling music for over a year. They seem to thrive on routine... and I try to oblige them. (Speaking of which... it is their suppertime and they will be waiting for me. Gotta run!)

We feed birds year round so have quite a few visit our garden throughout the year some of the birds that come to mind are... Pileated Woodpecker, Downy Woodpecker and this year for the first time Hairy Woodpecker. Bushtits come in flocks to the suet feeder. Chickadees Both Rufus and Annas Humingbirds Several kinds of Sparrows Towhees Robins Juncos California Quail, although they have been in the neighborhood forever they now come into our yard several times a day, sit on our roof early evening looking in a window, drives Percy are house kitty nuts. Goldfinches only come into the garden if we put a feeder out by our back fence. Some years we have Pine Siskins others we don't. House Finches which nest in the Boston Ivy on our chimney. Most Januarys we have Varied Thrush visit for awhile. Flickers We used to have both the Violet Green and Tree Swallows nest in our garden these and the Barn Swallows we don't see any more. I'm sure I've forgotten some of the birds we've seen or have at the feeders but can't think of them at the moment.

I'm sure your landscape lures more birds into your yard and makes them feel safer when they are visiting your feeders, Gary-. It's great to hear that you have so many wonderful species coming by. I get quite a few goldfinches at a time, too. They seem happiest in flocks, like the chipping sparrows do. But mine LOVE the thistle sock. They will eat sunflower seeds, etc, from the tray feeder, too, but the sock will sometimes be completely covered by clinging birds. Last year they emptied several completely. And they stayed until they were almost in full breeding plumage. It was fun to watch them go from grayish brown and black to brilliant yellow and black. Yep, they are cheerful little birds that brighten the yard, and I'm always sorry to see them go. But when they have buntings with them, both painted and indigo, it's even better. I noticed last year, btw, that the indigo buntings spent as much time picking through the grass as they did on the feeder tray. They were down there with the chipping sparrows an awful lot. Have you seen that, too? Marcia

The eagle is probably a 2 year old. I year olds are completely brown, 2 year olds are often mottled, 3 year olds have a dirty white head with a dark line through the eye and a white tail, and 4+ year old birds have the white head and tail. T.R. Michels TMIchels@yahoo.com
