Did you see my post on violent duck mating? It's on page two right now. Anyway I had to get rid of three males because they pecked my one females eyes so bad they got infected.I thought she would be blind but she has healed and has at least Partial sight. They can be quite tough! And need we say how tough the broody girls get!? My sons noticed how quiet it was on the pond. It is because I reduced the male population to only two.If they start up it will go to one!

Yes, you need to worry about her. Male ducks routinely group "rape" the female ducks. Often they drown them if water is around, perhaps give them just an inch or 2 of water might help. Remove all but 1 male. I've lost countless females every year due to the males drowning them in our pond. It is unfortunate but it is the way of ducks. Hopefully nothing will happen to your female, but at least you are now aware. Getting another female will not stop the 2 ganging up on 1, they will just pick 1 or the other. Brendasue

golden...they are just so SWEET! Hope Jinxie will come around...sounds like she wants companionship! The pics are wonderful! TFS! This "little one" we happened upon at the far end of our 6 acres under a pine tree...Mama was no where in sight & we checked back throughout the day...never saw Mama. I was so worried but we left her alone & she had changed her position on the ground a couple times. This morning DH went to check & said "little Bambi" was nowhere in sight. No signs of any predators...or struggle...so I know Mama came back...she was probably just hiding from us! Just wanted to share God's precious "little one!" Took with zoom lens as far away as possible...so not to frighten her. Jeanne S.

Oh my goodness Connie. Well, this is all so interesting to me. I did some looking around on-line, and found some documentation of Wood Ducks evicting Screech Owls from their nestboxes and also of Screech Owl females incubating Wood Duck eggs! Whoda thunk?? I was surprised to read that the Screech Owls would even choose a box that was so low, but, then I don't know much about the nesting preferences of Owls. I did read that successful Screech Owl pairs will often return to the same nesting site each year, and that isn't good for you if you wanted nesting Wood Ducks. Maybe those darn Crows will leave the Ducks in peace, and they will go on to choose the other box for nesting. It isn't like the Crows need the box for nesting.
