when do I give up?

I have a nice nest, attentive parents, 5 lovely eggs, a spooker, no visible problems. But I took the first photo of three eggs April 20, and of 5 eggs on April 28.......it is May 14.......When do I give up on them??

Howdy my first egg was 4 -26 4 eggs means incubation didn't start till at least the 30th , they are hatching today....These are BABIES they can't be rushed! LOL :D

Not yet. Not for at least another week. I'm sure they'll hatch any day now.

Here in zone 7, we don't cut them back until spring. Mine are just emerging--little tiny leaves at the very base of the old wood. Now, mine were labeled Miss Huff at the nursery, but they have no orange in them. Just pink and yellow, so I may actually have something else. I pulled one of mine a few weeks ago and moved it and it's still alive. It was the most difficult plant to dig up! Mine have gotten thick, even with the spring whacking that I give them. Cameron

When should I Give Up on a Cutting?

Ficus c is an extremely vigorous tree, so we can get away with practices rooting them that would be disastrous in other less vigorous plants. Still, the two most important influences on cutting success is the state of vitality and health of the parent plant, and cleanliness. In operations that propagate vegetatively, great pains are taken to see that the stock plants are in peak vitality and free of diseases. The propagation area and all things that come in contact with the plant are sterile or as close to sterile as possible. Nutrients in the propagation media/media solution actually inhibit the cuttings ability to remain hydrated. Additionally, the cutting cannot utilize nutrients until root primordia appear. At that point, it's beneficial to apply a weak fertilizer solution. Be patient. You're on people time and the tree is on tree time. They're different ..... and only one of you is capable of making allowances for that difference. ;o) .... and please don't move the cutting around so you can check for roots. You'll easily break the microscopic hair roots and set the rooting process back. Good luck. Al

Esh, this has bothered me since I responded. I answered the specific question but would like to add that this plant is not only not native, it is considered a noxious invasive. I should have pointed that out in my answer but didn't want to come off offensively or opinionated. I had this nightmare growing on my property when we bought it. I didn't think I would ever get rid of that mass of criss-crossing underground root system but I finally did with persistence and you have to dig deep to get the carrot type roots. I hate this plant. It does have pretty flowers but its ratty looking after blooming and not worth the space it takes up in the garden. There are so many better choices. I forgot to mention....Incubation does not always start right after the last egg is laid, it may not start for several days after. If she took 2,3,4 days you are due for babies in a day or two.

I would wait and see for awhile yet, it has been kinda long though. If she had three eggs on the 20th, she would have had five by the 22nd, incubation "should" have started on the 22nd but depending on the weather or any other situations it could have been delayed. Had it started on the 22nd today would be day 23 which is quite long. Did you look and see the eggs in between the photo on the 20th and the one you took on the 28th to make sure she did lay one egg per day or if there were any delays in the egg laying?

Thanks everybody! I didn't check in the box between photos, I felt bad disturbing them, as they sat nearby in a tree and chirped at me.

I'm in OK so of course we have had crazy weather, which is the norm. It is warm and sunny right now. 2 weeks of rain. I've seen them feeding though. I tend to not use insecticides on the yard or garden for the birds in general and any horned lizards that might still be around. I used to have a couple of families of them, but no more.
