Help!

Been a crazy month...around May 1st I was seeing a BB pair for the first time where I now live...so spent time on my deck getting photos NOT knowing they had nested in an old wall mounted planter 5' from my front door! Realized the situation 3 weeks ago....5 eggs then, still 5 eggs. When do I give up and/or get proactive?? Thanks!

I'm not sure what you mean by proactive. Do you mean remove the nest?? It usually takes about 18 days before the babies hatch. Give it more time.

The BBs seemed aggitated a month ago when taking photos...it could be the eggs have been there that long as well. On the net Ive seen advice as varied as "test an egg" or clean it out and hope for another brood...neither to my liking.

Roof looks great with your brick! I'd follow suit with the windows and get windows with no grids that have bronze frames. (picture below just for frame color reference). For your door I think you could save your door if you're able to replace the ornamental glass insert with a simple one and paint it a bold color that compliments your brick. Otherwise a new mildly contemporary door with cutouts. Definitely remove the teal planters as their tone does not go with your brick. Some simple landscaping with perennials and shrubs underneath the windows would be very pretty. Where is the street in relation to the front of the house?

Firstly, thanks for your response. We were watering every other day for the first 5 weeks. Just with the hose on the sprinkler setting for about 5 mins per tree. We did not hydrate the root ball. We followed the planting instructions that came with the trees. We dug the hole 3x the width of the root ball, placed the root ball into the hole, just slightly higher than ground level to allow for run off, and then back filled with the soil, trying to remove air pockets as we went. I should also add that we fertilised with evergreen fertiliser sticks about 5 weeks after planting (in April). We put the sticks about 5 feet from the trunk. They have been planted for 10-11 weeks now and this has begun in the last 2 weeks.

Is it possible to angle the trim on the left closer to the wall so that it will visually look parallel? Like say left side 30 Deg and right side 45 deg? I don't know.. plus chalking.. ?

Hey There: You are asking for advice, so here is my take on your shades. The mistake you made is putting huge shade in front of your windows. You should have gone with individual shade to each glass. This way to keep the beautiful design of the windows and you can install inside mount shades. You cannot fully use the shades because you have plants and things on your sill...an inside mount installation could have avoided this mishap. Last but not least: dim out bottom-up top-down shades give you the flexibility of managing light and privacy at once.

Unless you know when the eggs were laid (for sure) and when incubation started (for sure) I would just keep an eye on things. Typically Blues will start incubation on the day the last egg was laid (they lay one egg per day until the clutch is complete). Incubation is typically 14 days but can be as long as 23. Incubation can also be delayed for some reason too so just because the female was done laying unless you were watching and know she started incubating it could have been a few days later too. Do you see her in the nestbox alot and know she is incubaiting the eggs? If so I would wait a bit longer until you know for sure say that is has been 25 days since incubation started.

Thanks Donna- I see her fly off the nest evertime I arrive or leave my home...she is doing her best (as is he), but I'm concerned that the 25 days are near or past. What then? Remove eggs and hope for more?? Thanks again.

I will wait as you advise...hunting the net I read about shining a strong light through an egg to see if there is an ebryo. Are BBs truely that tolerant of having eggs "handled"? Thanks, Sam

YOu could do that however do not touch the egg with your bare hand as the oils from your hand can make the egg infertile. You could lift one up with a plastic spoon very carefully and set it in a container with a soft cloth in, take it inside and candle it with gloves on. I have never done this but know others that have. The bluebirds will tolerate you taking an egg and then putting it back. Good luck!

Congrats Mrbbird. How wonderful that the eggs have finally hatched. Hopefully they'll be safe enough in that planter, and you'll get to see healthy Bluebird babies fledge.

So glad you waited! Glad they finally hatched for you!! Like Kendra said, hopefully they will be safe in that planter, not sure what exactly they are nesting in...Could you take a photo of it and show us?
