bizzarbazzar, There are lots of sites that give information about hummingbird breeding ranges, etc. Just try googling Montana, hummingbirds, range maps, etc etc. From what I can see, the major species of breeding hummingbirds in Montana are the Calliope and Rufous. There are also Broad-tailed breeding in the west, and Black-chinned, plus occasional ruby-throats, as well, up in the north central part. Anna's and Costa's are listed as transients. Take a look at this website, and you will find range maps for the various hummingbirds found in Montana. It's a government, fish and wildlife type site, so they ought to know. I'm not sure where you are in Montana, but I hope it's in the west. There just don't seem to be many hummingbirds at all in the southeast and central parts of the state. They're mostly found in the mountainous west. Some advice about the website--I found that if you used the search feature, the site got flaky. It's best to just click on the species, and you should be able to get a range map. If you go to the bottom of the page and click on "Montana Bird List," then click on "General Search" on the left, you will get to a query page that will allow you to scroll down to whatever species of bird you want, then track down more specific sighting information. The results will display code letters for the type of sighting--Direct evidence of breeding, Indirect evidence of breeding, transient, overwintering, etc. If you're really intensely interested, you might consider wading through this query feature. I've never seen the hummingbirds being bothered by the scrub jays in my area. Mine also get along well with the similarly sized hooded orioles, even though those make frequent visits to the sugar water feeders. They ignore the mockingbirds (I would not mind if the hummers formed a gang and chased that annoying species away!). Our hummingbird activity has even picked up lately. I'm in south OC, and although it has been hot lately, there is more of an ocean influence than a few more miles inland. If you are in a dryer, hotter area of Los Angeles, they could be moving closer to the beach. Or, as you said, they have moved on to something else that is in heavy bloom now. When it is really hot, I have seen hummingbirds drink from our garden fountains. If you don't have moving water available nearby, they might also be shifting closer to a source for water.

There is an entire forum here dedicated to gardening for hummingbirds. This topic has been discussed endlessly there and you will find many suggestions. But it will of course be location related....not all plants grow well in all areas. And since hummers tend to be year round residents in CA (like they are here in WA state), I'd look at what you could grow and would flower in winter as well......lots of possibilities. (Hint: I was at the Huntington Gardens cactus and succulent garden one New Year's Eve a few years ago. One could hardly walk through it without getting buzzed by dozens of hummingbirds that were feeding off nectar from the blooming aloes, cacti, etc.) You should also post this in the California Gardening forum for local input.
