Crows attacking cardinal nest

We are fortunate to have a pair of cardinals nesting in our backyard in Ottawa. The mother is now incubating. However last night a pair of crows attacked. I was luckily alerted to this by my 3 year old daughter and I ran out and defended the nest. The cardinals are back in business this morning but I'm worried the crows will be back this evening.

We have a large plastic owl in our shed. I was wondering about putting this up a couple of yards behind the shrub the cardinals are nesting in. However I'm worried the cardinals will be freaked out. Is this a bad idea?

I can't always be there to defend the nest, are there any other ways to scare off crows but not cardinals?
