OT..for Rachel or others about bug spray?

You have been talking about a natural

bug spray or oil to keep them away when

outdoors, instead of using the commercial stuff?

I was going to dilute some with water and test

spray a little on my gooseberry and black currant bush to

see if it keeps some fruit flies away.

What is everybody using?

For me, I put some tea tree oil (for no-see-ums) and eucalyptus oil (for mosquitoes) in water-either bath water or in a bowl and splash it on me, and/or dip my shirt in the water/oil before I go out in the heat and let it dry in the sun. It repels all insects I know of so far

But since I've been taking 4 drops MMS drops mixed with 1/8 tsp citric acid twice a day (supposed to clean out all parasites, some viruses, toxic metals), for some reason, now most bugs don't bite me or even get in my face.

For spraying bushes, tho, I've read that you can simply mix a squirt of dish soap and glug of vegetable oil in water and spray it on your plants and it will supposedly repel all known bugs.

I know it certainly keeps ants off the hummer feeders to wipe a tiny amount of vegetable oil on hanger hook; ants will not cross even residual oil. I wipe tiny amounts of oil with a Q-tip far down inside plastic flower hummer sippers on feeders, and it keeps wasps away until the next time I wash the hummer feeder.

If I can find it, I might give it a try, have used soap and oil before at around flowering time and after but
not pleased with the results, about 90% of berries are still infested and fall off.
That oil trick on ants sounds good!

I've had great success with all the options Ohiofem suggests, Neem, spinosad, and Bacillus thurengiensis (BTK, Bt worm killer, thuricide). Like the others said, its best to inspect your plants everyday (it doesn't have to take long), not only for your safety, environmental responsibility and the health of your plants, but because most insecticides are essentially useless as preventatives. Antifeedants and insect growth regulators are exceptions, so you can look into that if you have the inclination. If you want a broad, but safe preventative, neem is your best bet. To use it effectively, you have to spray much more regularly than a conventional insecticide, so be honest with yourself about how much time/effort you're willing to invest. More dilute + more often doesn't always hold, but IMHO it does with neem - it minimizes plant toxicity, and maintains effectiveness. Squash borers can be heartbreaking - they totally wiped out one of my zucchini plantings this year. Unlike other pests, once you really notice the problem, the damage is done - there's usually not much you can do, especially in containers. Personally, I would start using a weak insecticidal soap on your cantaloupe and summer squash stems as soon as you see the first flowers, twice a week. Be very thorough about spraying down the stems, particularly at the base of the plant and about 8-10 inches up the stems. Read up on them for more information. Spray very late in the evening to protect bees and to reduce the stress/phytoxicity for the plant. Never spray when the plants are water stressed.

I did not want to use pesticides in the garden, but after years of having bugs, particulary tiny, tiny beetles chew up my plants, I finally bought plant spray from Lowes. It did the trick. I tryed the "natural stuff" before, but it seemed rather ineffective. So I got the regular garden stuff. It works. One thing I learned about garden mistakes, DON'T WORRY ABOUT. You will have plenty of chances to get it right. If you have a plant disaster that is breaking your heart, pull the darn thing, quick. Suffer no more! Move on. Watch those peppers for a few days, then pull quickly and replace them if they don't look good. You have a lot of months ahead of you to grow a new batch.

OK, I surrender :) The insecticide pyrethrins, under discussion, is contained in many products with different brand names. For example, you could check labels of "house and garden" aerosols that are sold in supermarkets. Aerosol might be convenient for you. The ingredients are pyrethrins + pepironyl butoxide. Be sure it is labeled for use on plants. This insecticide kills most bugs (good or bad) on contact, but has no residual effect. This means you must reach each insect with the spray. It is considered relatively safe for mammals. Another low-risk insecticide is spinosad. It is residual but has less effect on beneficial insects. Google the term for brand names. Fertilome, Monterrey, and Gardens Alive are some producers. You want the active ingredient spinosad. It will kill rose slugs. You need a tank sprayer to apply it. Use insecticides only on plants where there is active damage going on.

Hi, all! I'm very grateful for your responses. I think individual experiences are much more valid than blurbs on different product websites. Tree_Oracle, that picture of a Dixie plate loaded with carcases is pretty powerful advertising; I think of all those Mosquito Mamas looking for a host --- foiled! Unfortunately, I don't think this product would work for us. We live along the Oyster River in Connecticut. It's a narrow tidal river, very marshy and filled with s-curves, inlets and ponds --- a mosquito breeding ground even in dry years. After a storm, like last night's, it floods and turns into a lake, plus the wind blows up and down the river. I'll search for some of the spray products mentioned because as Tree_Oracle put it, there's not really a choice between West Nile and being environmentally safe. After checking out the links Claire provided, it's pretty clear why DEET has endured. Definitely suiting up in long sleeves and pants plus a hat is the first line of defense and then spraying myself, maybe Eucalyptus Oil Sray or a product with picaridin along with DEET-based sprays along my feet. I'll also look into those Mosquito Dunks/Mosquito Bits by Summit. The idea of using Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis sounds intriguing. From the little reading I did on it today, it sounds effective against the mosquitos and flies as well as not harmful to aquatic life, although it's probably too late in the season to use it this year. I hope there'll be a solution to the White Nose Syndrome in bats. Each year we have noticed fewer and fewer here along our river. It stands for "Miracle Mineral Supplement."

Supposedly it is used in the tropics to cure malaria in one dose and many other miraculous claims are made for it. It most certainly is a parasite cleanse. It only costs $20 a bottle on ebay and since you take so little, it lasts for months, doesn't need refrigeration.

You're told to start with a few drops mixed with 5 drops of citric acid per MMS drop and gradually increase dosage amount until you can take 5 drops 5 times a day for 5 days.

Then you can drop back to 5-10 drops a day, or every other day. Strangely, side effects include losing body odor, bugs ignore you. But the dosage has to be increased slowly or can cause nausea. Works best on empty stomach
