Robins building nest outside back door as I type =)

Hello all-

they are building on an outside light right outside the door.

We use that door all the time to take the dog out, let the cat in and out, kids, etc.

I'd like to let them do their thing but does that mean we can't use that door? This is the first time any bird has built a nest there.

Or can we just keep using the door, just trying to be a little quieter?

How long will this last?

Uh-oh. They are very territorial, especially once they have babies in the nest. I was very nearly head-pecked last year when I accidentally got too near to a nest full of Robin babies. That day, I found out that I actually can still run!!! LOLOLOL

Oh boy...does that mean I should take the emerging nest down??

My head is only 1 foot away from the nest when I stand at the door......yikes!

Mama bird is staring me down through the window...oh great, she just got on a bush so she's eye to eye with me....

help!

I found some 2x4s laying around, if you don't have any you can get the stud grade I have them at Lowe's for $1.57 for the 2x4 x96 studs. I used about five, if I count my scrap. Then I used a peace of 15/32 inch plywood at 2FT x 4FT as the bottem. I ran a 4FT peace of 2X4 on one side, and four 18 inch peaces on the ends standing up right with supporting 2x4 peaces forming a box at the top and bottem of my up right peaces. Make sure the supporting peaces are on the outside, as you will need them later. My only question, of witch I have not tested, as I still have nails to cut off before doing this, is I atached screening to the short ends as I was reading that a open air coop is better then a dark dank closed up coop. I then took some old barn wood from a barn we took down next dore, and used it for the back as I didn't have any more plywoodI then started running out of scroos, hints the nails that I have to cut off, my framing gun only had really long nails in it at the time. I plan to add a hinged top as I am thinking of cutting an opening in the coop wall, and ataching the box over it on the outside so that the Hens can go in and out at will. I spent in all $20 on my coop and nesting box. I had the deck scroos and the 15/32 plywood left over from building the dog houses, and the 1/4 sheets were removed from the walls of the house when we took out the old bathroom. This is why I tell people not to get rid of things that you might use later. if anyone has a good idea about the screened sides, Please let me know if I should close them up. On the coop, I am installing a screen dore on the south side, that can close at night, but open in the day time to let the hens out to the yard.

Well, Konrad, those robins took ten days to get from Beaumont to Ellerslie (a ten minute highway drive). I just saw and heard my first one this evening. But, he was so nice. A big, dark colored male, really letting the world know he had arrived. And he loved my flower beds. Fed in there for about ten minutes. We don't have many (more like none) mature trees around here right now, which is probably why I haven't seen any until tonight. He's probably a bit late and can't find a mate. I had an interesting situation at our house. Bought a flower planter and left it on our front porch about chest high off the porch. I saw a bird's nest appear a couple weeks later but never saw a bird so I tossed the nest into the bushes to mulch. Then I saw the flowers were trampled and looked to see why and found 3 Robin's eggs in the flower bed. I used utensils to retrieve the nest from the bushes and carefully laid the 3 eggs into the nest. All the while the mama Robin was squawking at me. I checked and saw the bird returned to the nest and was doing some tidying up. Then low and behold she reclaimed the nest. Later that same day I saw 4 eggs as she apparently had one in reserve. She is nesting nicely now and we can't wait to see her little hatchlings come to life. I did handle the nest by hand at first when I tossed it but who knows if the bird cared. It makes sense that birds don't have a sense of smell.

I just stumbled upon this post as I try to prevent the recurring problems from Barn Swallows again this year. Unfortunately, the image is no longer available and I cannot see how you hung the netting. We have a colony of Barn Swallows that roost at our apartment building each year. The landlord hates them, but a former tenant had posted signs everywhere about how it was illegal to remove the nests. It was only through my own research that I realized it was only illegal while eggs or babies were in the nests, and those tenants moved out this winter. In addition to nesting on top of our buildings lights, covered walkways, and eaves, my apartment and the one next door have outdoor entrances from our gorgeous courtyard and patio which have covered stairwells. Each year, the swallows fly through these two stairwells like its the Lincoln Tunnel, dive bombing anyone who tries to walk on the stairs. They build their nests on the outlet boxes or porch lights. The first summer we lived here, I thought it was really neat to have such a close view of their lives, as I would often sit on my steps and could watch the babies as they grew, taking great care to be quiet and non-threatening. However, I also found that my porch steps and exterior wall were covered with bird droppings. They are also very very noisy when there is an entire colony of them outside of your windows. All of the "teenage" birds hang out in one of our courtyard trees outside of my window, which my cat loves but can actually drown out any conversation or television in our living room. Then I experienced what I thought were bed bugs in our house. I had tiny bites head to toe and could constantly feel them crawling on me despite rarely being able to see anything. It got so bad that I was getting the bites infected from itching all the time, and I couldn't sleep because I could feel the bugs crawling on my skin as soon as I tried to relax. I finally captured a few and took them to the University's Department of Entymology, who identified them as bird mites. That experience was HORRIFIC. I was ready to burn our entire building down after reading that the bird mites multiply much more quickly than bed bugs and are nearly impossible to remove. Luckily, the mites died off when the birds finally left for the season, but I can no longer sit outside on my wooden stairs because I fear contracting them again. The next spring, I tried the knock-down method, just on my own stairwell. I would open my screen door 2 inches and use a broom handle to knock down the nests up to 7 times a day. The swallows became very agitated, and and two attacked my daughter's head when she got home from school one of the days. I couldn't sit inside and repeat this process forever, though, and they got their nest up one day while I was off at a 12 hour work shift. The outlet covers they use are too high up to see into, and I knew that some other nests already had eggs, so I couldn't knock it down, more out of compassion than fear of charges. This will be our third summer here. Our elderly landlord has given up trying to prevent them from nesting even in the building entryways. I have removed my porch light cover so there is no solid surface to nest on, but the outlet box cover is too high up and I can't put a ladder on the stairs to reach it. I have considered trying to throw a cotton ball soaked with peppermint oil up there (it has worked in the past for mice and spider problems), or hanging a bunch of cut aluminum as a mobile at the top of the steps (I have heard that the reflections off the metal scare birds off), but I simply can't go through another year of this if those methods don't work. I saw that I could use something to create a 45% slope where the nest to prevent them, but again... getting up there is an issue. I am curious to see how you used the mesh. Could you please share the picture again?

If they are just building it I would absolutely take it down and put something there to prevent their rebuilding it. If you leave them to it it will impact your life for weeks.

I had robins do the same thing on my back patio where I take the dogs in and out- high prey drive dogs. Unfortunately for me I did not see it until there were eggs present and so I let them run their course.

Long story short I had to fence off the area to keep the dogs from going at the babies (I have extremely large dogs who can stand on their back legs and get at things six feet high), and as it was hard concrete underneath I padded the floor for the moment they jumped. I also had to extend fencing to accommodate the babies making their way to cover. It was exhausting, but everything worked out and I got a lovely series of photos right up until the last moments before they jumped out.

The only positive I can think of aside from their all living was that it forced me to learn a great deal about baby robins so I could stay one step ahead of their development in terms of keeping them safe.
I did not find the mother to be at all territorial towards me- I kept my regular in and out schedule. I did provide mealworms from time to time to try and help keep her healthy.
So unless you are prepared to spend time and energy devising ways to keep them safe, nip it in the bud and remove the nest.

The last photo was about ten minutes before the last ones to leave jumped out.

Leave the nest. Enjoy the robins. Use another door for 6 weeks.

They don't hurt anyone. They're Robins, for goodness sake!

LOL, using a different door is not an option for everyone.
Mine is the only exit from the dogs areas.

Wow, Cearbhaill, those are wonderful pictures. I know it was a lot of work for you, but it was probably quite rewarding as well. When I had Robins nesting in the rafters in my garage, they were not territorial towards me either. They only became protective if a tall person entered the garage. I love Robins. They are such smart, personable birds.

Thanks for the advice/opinions. My dog won't even be aware that they are there but my cat is a different story!

Can I just keep using my back door? The dog's line is back there so we can just hook him up to do his business. I don't think I can put a line in the front yard.

Where did you put the mealworms so the mom could get them? Maybe I'll do that and since she'll be happy with me we can all co-exist peacefully!

Nobody that lives here had any trouble at all with the Robins that nested in our garage. We just made sure the door stayed open so they could get in and out, and used the garage as we normally would (which is for a lot!) After all, "your" Robin chose to build the nest there even though you use that door all the time. Could you hook a little bowl somewhere under the nest, perhaps on the wall where she could see it? If she can look down and see the mealworms, she will certainly take advantage of your offering. She will especially appreciate it after the young have hatched. It sure would be fun if you and your kids could be there to watch them fledge. They are really amazing birds and as each one learns to fly, it will in turn encourage the next fledgling. It is fascinating to see.

Thank you Kendra-I may try that if she continues to build...we had a very windy day yesterday and it knocked everything down.

This morning I looked and she is building again. Obviously, this was meant to happen =) so I will wish her the best and get some mealworms for her when the time comes.
