Robins building nest outside back door as I type =)

Hello all-

they are building on an outside light right outside the door.

We use that door all the time to take the dog out, let the cat in and out, kids, etc.

I'd like to let them do their thing but does that mean we can't use that door? This is the first time any bird has built a nest there.

Or can we just keep using the door, just trying to be a little quieter?

How long will this last?

Uh-oh. They are very territorial, especially once they have babies in the nest. I was very nearly head-pecked last year when I accidentally got too near to a nest full of Robin babies. That day, I found out that I actually can still run!!! LOLOLOL

Oh boy...does that mean I should take the emerging nest down??

My head is only 1 foot away from the nest when I stand at the door......yikes!

Mama bird is staring me down through the window...oh great, she just got on a bush so she's eye to eye with me....

help!

Robins are birds that I enjoy viewing, but not as they try to build nests under our porch lights which are on both sides of an area right by our front entrance door. For three days my husband has removed the straw, twigs, etc in order to prevent a completed robin's nest. They put the straw, twigs, etc. up, he takes them down immediately. Today after reading these posts, I sprayed the area with ant and roach spray that I use when the ants try to visit too close to our outside walkway. Two robins just came with straw in their mouths, but they flew away. I hope this is a long-term solution. This is the first time that we have had this problem in the nineteen years that we have lived here. I am already tired of the mess on our porch and the potential health hazard presented if the robins succeed in building a permanent nest. We have plenty of trees that the birds usually choose for their nests and are still quite welcome to do so. However, why our porch this year is a puzzle. Thanks to all who have posted for their solutions. To the haters, because one does not want a bird's nest in an area that he/she frequently uses in his/her home, does not label the person as an animal hater. Why should my quality of life be compromised daily upon trying to enter my home for the sake of a bird's nest? The answer is that it shouldn't and will not. We will win this fight and reclaim our safety and keep our good health.

We had a robin build a nest under our deck one year. Same area (near the ceiling) where your robins built their nest! The 2 babies fledged and left in good shape. We took care not to approach or bother them. I would put mealworms out for them away from the nest. The parents would watch for me. Sometimes the father would trot up and look at me while I was watering the flowers. MORE MEALWORMS please! The parents did not return the following year. I think it was because raccoons and groundhogs started coming around for the bird food and worms. I used to store peanuts in a plastic garbage can out on the deck. One night a creature chewed a hole in the lid. I didn't know what kind of animal was doing this so I replaced it with a metal can/metal lid and wrapped a chain over it. The next day the ungrateful beast had urinated all over it! I stopped storing the peanuts (any food) on the deck. I also had to cut back on the number and type of bird feeders because they were climbing on these and knocking the food out. No more mealworms either as raccoons and groundhogs like these as well. We finally had to hire a trapper. The groundhogs were tunneling under our deck and I didn't like how bold the raccoons were becoming. The trapper advised us to seal all the open areas (lattice) around our deck to prevent future invasions. We trapped several raccoons and groundhogs, a skunk and a couple of squirrels and a rabbit. We released the squirrels and rabbit. I would like to mention that the trapper said trapped squirrels can be so desperate to get loose, that they will frequently break their necks trying to get out of these Havahart traps. The ones we had trapped didn't do this because we were checking the traps 3x a day and didn't give them a lot of time to worry themselves to death. Chipmunks were also a problem this year. Our neighbor said he had caught 15 of them this year alone. Did you know that chipmunks can weaken your foundation/sidewalks? Now I know why a section of our front sidewalk dropped.....:( I'm hoping the robins will try again next year.

How can I build in a toaster oven and vent it outside?

First, the toaster oven installation directions should specify the required distances to the side and above for combustable materials. Having a vent hood above is certainly safer than having a cabinet above, which is the usual condition when the oven is placed on a counter. I would recommend against having any doors. Beyond the hazards described above, they probably could be argued to not conform to the typical use of a toaster oven. You are doing an entire kitchen, so a building permit, electrical permit, and plumbing permit are going to be required most places. It is for your own sake that the inspections are performed. The inspector will want to know that the installation is compliant with the manufacturer's instructions for both the toaster oven and the hood, so keep the instructions handy. BTW, I think a modest hood is a good idea. It should be deep enough to extend from the wall to a point beyond the toaster door when open if you want to catch most of the effluent that excapes when the door is opened. It may have to be some minimum height above the oven; check directions before buying. Town and municipality rules typically require permits for everything one does to a residence that relates to electrical, fire, or plumbing. This is usually ignored by homeowners for tiny jobs, such as changing a light switch, even though some may need oversight. Some localities may allow the homeowner to pull the permits for his own house. The inspectors will still expect conformance with all codes. kas

We had on come in on our open porch and build a nest over an old barn window I had hung on the wall...She would fly away as we came in and out but she didn't abandon them. There were three little ones and they all left the nest as fledglings. I think she nested there for about three years in a row. But since the cat adopted us and our porch...she hasn't come back...I hope it is because she found a better place and not that our cat found a lunch.... patti

If they are just building it I would absolutely take it down and put something there to prevent their rebuilding it. If you leave them to it it will impact your life for weeks.

I had robins do the same thing on my back patio where I take the dogs in and out- high prey drive dogs. Unfortunately for me I did not see it until there were eggs present and so I let them run their course.

Long story short I had to fence off the area to keep the dogs from going at the babies (I have extremely large dogs who can stand on their back legs and get at things six feet high), and as it was hard concrete underneath I padded the floor for the moment they jumped. I also had to extend fencing to accommodate the babies making their way to cover. It was exhausting, but everything worked out and I got a lovely series of photos right up until the last moments before they jumped out.

The only positive I can think of aside from their all living was that it forced me to learn a great deal about baby robins so I could stay one step ahead of their development in terms of keeping them safe.
I did not find the mother to be at all territorial towards me- I kept my regular in and out schedule. I did provide mealworms from time to time to try and help keep her healthy.
So unless you are prepared to spend time and energy devising ways to keep them safe, nip it in the bud and remove the nest.

The last photo was about ten minutes before the last ones to leave jumped out.

Leave the nest. Enjoy the robins. Use another door for 6 weeks.

They don't hurt anyone. They're Robins, for goodness sake!

LOL, using a different door is not an option for everyone.
Mine is the only exit from the dogs areas.

Wow, Cearbhaill, those are wonderful pictures. I know it was a lot of work for you, but it was probably quite rewarding as well. When I had Robins nesting in the rafters in my garage, they were not territorial towards me either. They only became protective if a tall person entered the garage. I love Robins. They are such smart, personable birds.

I agree! Great pictures...

Thanks for the advice/opinions. My dog won't even be aware that they are there but my cat is a different story!

Can I just keep using my back door? The dog's line is back there so we can just hook him up to do his business. I don't think I can put a line in the front yard.

Where did you put the mealworms so the mom could get them? Maybe I'll do that and since she'll be happy with me we can all co-exist peacefully!

Nobody that lives here had any trouble at all with the Robins that nested in our garage. We just made sure the door stayed open so they could get in and out, and used the garage as we normally would (which is for a lot!) After all, "your" Robin chose to build the nest there even though you use that door all the time. Could you hook a little bowl somewhere under the nest, perhaps on the wall where she could see it? If she can look down and see the mealworms, she will certainly take advantage of your offering. She will especially appreciate it after the young have hatched. It sure would be fun if you and your kids could be there to watch them fledge. They are really amazing birds and as each one learns to fly, it will in turn encourage the next fledgling. It is fascinating to see.

Thank you Kendra-I may try that if she continues to build...we had a very windy day yesterday and it knocked everything down.

This morning I looked and she is building again. Obviously, this was meant to happen =) so I will wish her the best and get some mealworms for her when the time comes.
