will the bluebirds accept a ceramic house or do they have to be wooden

In my opinion a ceramic house would get way too hot to be used for nesting birds. If you've ever left any kind of glass or ceramic item in the sun for any length of time you can feel just how hot it would get. A 3/4" thick wooden house with ventaltion mounted on a slick metal pole with a pretador baffle is the saftest.

Those look so cute! You did a great job painting them too. Makes your shelves look very festive. I too learned how to do that at an Airforce base crafts center. Used to carry a couple jugs of "slip" in my car all the time so I would be ready when I had time to go to the crafts center! That was the year DH got sent to Thailand, so cleaning the greenware and painting the ceramics filled many hours that might otherwise have been lonely hours. Back then, there were ceramic stores all over, but now, you can seldom find one. However, Michael's does have a few of those resin pieces that you can buy and paint. One of my friends painted several of those at Christmas. Thanks for showing us your pretty decorations, and bringing back some memories too. ;o) Luvs

Is my fireplace made for ceramic logs? Help!

I believe that photo is posted upside down. However as far as that fireplace being a gas only from what I can see it is not. Not being able to see it clearly I would say no its not, what it appears to be is an ignition line for wood. I am concerned with what appears to be a 90 degree elbow that is in very poor condition. Please, I beg you please have a local pro look at the unit first hand before you light the fireplace. I know money can be tight after a move but I want you get someone in there to check that gas line as well as flue before you do anything with that unit. I was told by a firefighter the #1 cause of fires in the fall and winter are fireplaces. Just last New Years my next door neighbour had a chimney fire from a dirty flue that caught fire, that's when I talked to the firefighter. As well he will give you a definite answer as to what you have there. I wish I could be of more help, but you need to service that unit.

Thanks palimpsest .... I fell in love with a kitchen I saw in a granite yard and thoughtright away: that's what I want!!! And they used the Jeffrey Court Chapter 12. They had a row of 2x3 (set vertically) ~ and inch accent tile ~ then two rows of 6x6s set diagnally. And it looked GREAT. Behind the stove area they used a accent border with hexagons inside. I'm sure they had at least 18 inches from countertop to top of cabinets. I have only 16 (maybe even a little less). So, I'm thinking I should start looking at 4x4s or just use the 6x6s set straight. Behind my sink I want an accent area consising of (if I use the Jeffrey Court) 2x3 subways set in a brick pattern; a 1/2 inch accent border, shaped in a rectangle (but with an arched top); NOW in the accent area, I want 1x1 glass sparkley tile ~ all tone-on-tone (pretty much); because my granite (Delicatus Brown), will be quite busy! This is just driving me crazy, I tell ya. I have looked at thousands of BSs trying to get ideas. But before anything can be done; we have to take off my current tile. 1x1 mosaics (whites/off-whites) on the counter and backsplash (from counter to top of cabinets). Don't think this will be any kind of fun job :( Hoping to get started on taking those off next week. Thanks for your help!! jody

Yep, decorative nestboxes are for just that, decoration...not suitable normally for actually housing birds. Wooden is the way to go, I agree ceramic would get way too hot.

Not just ceramic, but metal houses are a no, no as well! There is a lovely garden and gift center where I live, and they carry some adorable metal bird houses....The owner is a friend of mine and I asked her to please let customers know that these houses are NOT for nesting!!!!!!

Thanks all,when I saw the house I thought "how cute' but I just knew it wasn't right so I didn't buy it. I need to find a hole minimizer to keep sparrows out

You can find hole reducers at WBU. Just remember anything small enough to keep house sparrows out will also keep bluebirds out since they are bigger than a house sparrow.

One of the best defenses against house sparrows is to use a sparrow spooker which is put on the box after the first egg is layed.
