Debate going on here. Is it better to shoot a male or female sparrow? I have heard it is best to shoot male, because he calls in the female.

Let me rephrase that last post. I am talking about English House Sparrows and their elimination.

They are equal targets, however, the male is much easier to identify and does most of the killing of surrounding cavity nesters. The female is half of the breeding pair and not spared.

I know nothing about birds i have had a small wooden bird house on my porch for 20 years i have had small sparrows or wrens living there and mating there for years This year i bought a hanging house like feeder which is hung about 4 feet away i never knew that people hate house sparrows i enjoy watching thrm sitting on top of the bird house once or twice i saw them at the feeder not much action I filled the feeder with classic wild bird food i hope i see more birds in the Spring any advice for me about seeds or sparrows i have never had a problem i just wanted to feed thrm thanks for your advice

I only get a few House Sparrows here but would find a horde of them intolerable and would remove the feeders (especially during the summer/fall, when food is more abundant for birds). There are more active measures you can take if you are willing. I have a BB gun but have never been able to hit one, however I have trapped a few with an inbox trap when Bluebirds were nesting in my yard. I would definitely remove the English Sparrow nests and discourage them from nesting in the Arborvitaes. Another thing I read you can do, is flush the birds from the arborvitaes on very cold nights. They will be unlikely to find new cover after dark and will be vulnerable to predators and hypothermia.

I would think so too, except there is definitely a light yellow tint there, similar to a canary. He/she really stands out among the flock of darker sparrows. I've never seen one like it.

Absolutely! Some kind of unidentified species builds tiny, webby cocoons under our porch roof, and I see small birds swoop under and snag those critters all the time. It’s harder to spot the dining on and inside of roses, but I’ve caught a few birds grabbing something from Buff Beauty and Penelope and then flying away. Today a crow snuck up and snagged a potato chip at my daughter’s class picnic. :-) Carol

Huh? No shooting allowed where I live. Not birds, fish, animals, or humans.

Is this a serious question? If so, then the answer is neither. The life of every bird has equal value, regardless of gender or species.

Whichever you have the best shot at. If you can't get both, and if the male has "claimed" a nestbox, I think I might lean towards getting the female first (if I am 100% sure it is a female hosp). My experience has been that the males return to their "claimed" nest shortly after I have eliminated the female.
