When an unusual nest was built in one of mu Bluebird boxes I was advised it was likely a Chickadee nest. I could never get a good look at the bird as she came and went so quickly and being an old codger with hearing loss I seldom hear the songs the birds sing. The eggs finally hatched and more activity at the nest has allowed me to get a good look. After searching the webb I have determined it is the Tufted Titmouse. Very pretty little bird and a cousin in the Chickadee family. When the fledglings leave the nest will I need to clean out the box as with Bluebirds or leave it for the birds to reuse?

Congratulations Windmillman on your Tufted Titmice. I haven't had a nest of those before so that would be exciting. Always clean out nestboxes after the fledglings leave. Old nests are often very unsanitary. Keep us posted.

Hey Keith, You are right, they are the same thing. I use the terms interchangably. You can make your own or buy them already made. I get mine from www.sparrowtraps.net and have also bought a sparrow trap from them. I buy enough mounting brackets to go on each of my boxes, putting the mounting bracket on as soon as I make a house. I then add the spooker as soon as the first egg is laid. I have never had a blue bird not accept a spooker, nor have I ever had a sparrow try to claim a box after a spooker has been added. I had two spookers from last year and I bought 4 more this year thinking that six would be enough. However, I now have 10 boxes with blue birds and three with tree sparrows. I need to order (or make) seven or eight more to make sure I am covered. Phil

I make a suet mix specifically for the Bluebirds (never any millet) but the House Sparrows are not particular. They will eat just about anything. I've even had them at my nyjer feeder. So I don't think it is your mixture that is causing the problem. The problem is too many hungry HOSP. I have never seen them warding off other birds from a feeder, though they are certainly a problem during nesting season. While I do have some regulars so far this winter, they are in far fewer numbers. I don't know if WI had the same early storm that we had here in the northeast. But I wonder if because it knocked down so many trees, if the birds have flown further south to obtain better food sources? I'm still hoping the regulars come back once the weather gets really cold.

I have hanging feeders full of black oil sunflower seeds but the titmouse nuthatch, and chichadee occupy them. The only time I see the cardinals are when the grapevine are full and they will fly in and out of branches and vines. I am not sure they are eating grapes are not. Doesn't matter, though there is plenty now as there is only dh and me and I don't put by as much jelly and juice as I use to.

I'm really green on the electronic media but if I did it right I finally got pictures of the Titmouse. They don't often stand and pose like my Bluebirds so it has been hard to catch a picture in focus. Should be three pictures

Great pictures! I hope I get a pair of those to nest someday. There are quite a few in my neighborhood, I think they like have chosen natural cavities to nest in, although I did see them peek into one of my houses one day.
