squirrel damage? why at this time of year?

Yikes! If that's a squirrel it's got mighty chompers! Was there a nest in there previously? I wonder how long it took the creature to gnaw through that?

I haven't seen the perp in action but cannot figure what else could or would do this. it's time to get out my pellet rifle.

Last year I picked Nakita's Gift and let some ripen and dried some. Most of the fruit that I allowed to ripen turned a black color on one side, the skin gets rough, and the pulp inside next to the black area was not good. The rest of the fruit tasted good. Must be some kind of disease. The dried fruit were excellent, seems like the astringency goes away after only a 3-4 hours of drying, even though they are not completely dried. They ended up tasting like candy, much better than the Saijo that I dried, but to be fair, the entire crop of Saijo did not seem to taste as well as what I remember a Saijo should taste like. that was my first attempt at drying persimmon, and I don't think that I dried them as much as they were supposed to be, about 12 hours, but I kept them in the freezer and they were very good eating through the winter.

I have had this for 3 years, and I believe the seller told me it was about 2 years when I bought it. It didn't do much the first two years, then this year I put it on top of my garage roof with a 30% shade cloth, and it has literally doubled in size. And it was actually the squirrel attack that prompted me to build boxes out of PVC pipes and shade cloth to protect my plants. So my plants get sun all day long. Some are in full sun, some get 30% shade. It has worked out great!! :) Can't wait until the winter is over to see all my plants THRIVE :)

Should be fine. However it does not sound like it established a root system last fall. Any blooms it would have may be at the expense of the plant's health. Normally a peony when planted in the autumn will send out fine white at first roots. These roots grow and mature during winter when the rest of the plant is dormant. Since the animal was able to tear it from the soil the roots, if they had formed, were damaged and the plant will have to expend it's energy building new roots. The new roots are essential because they take the nutriants from the soil to build next years flowers. If you want to have it flower to establish that you did receive the correct plant, cut the flower stem when the bud is in a soft marshmallow stage. The bud feels like a marshmallow when squeezed.

If you make another wooden birdhouse to replace this one, consider putting a metal piece around the opening. My husband made me 2 of these chickadee houses last season and although no chickadees have nested there yet, there's zero squirrel damage (so far).

I build bird houses too. while I'm able to make some metal covers myself I've been looking for something I can buy off the shelf like a lock escutcheon. I was surprised to find that with the exception of the entrance hole size that wren/chickadee houses are the same size. I have a pair of Asian sparrows moving into the twin of that chewed up birdhouse.

Duncraft has what they call Portal Protectors in different sizes.

They're not big enough for your existing damage but should be OK for a new birdhouse.

Hmmmm..........wow........that varmint was definitely after something! But.....here's something to consider. We have wooden posts holding up the roof to our large open front porch. The squirrels are chewing on the bottoms of them! .....even through the paint.
I'm thinking they are using it somehow in their nests?? They also strip the small branches of our tulip trees for the bark for their nests. I'm thinking that's what they are doing to your birdhouse..........they're after the wood, not what's inside it.

well the live traps & my pellet rifle have been put back in service.. the chewing had begun on another house but is not too bad yet. I hung it on a longer hook so it's not as accessible ( for the squirrel ).
Claire-thanks for the heads up on the metal. i'll replace that front panel & put that house back in service.
it's 70 deg. here today. even my bees are flying.
