Tomato grafting root stock - need info & help

Hello all,

I have never grafted a tomato onto rootstock. I am looking at Johnny's Selected Seed Maxifort (F1) rootstock to try my luck with grafting.

I did a search here on GardenWeb and could not find anything helpful (to me).

Can someone give some information or point me to a visual (film, photos) lesson in grafting tomato plants.

I remember participating in several threads that had to do with grafting tomatoes so did a search and came up with several excellent threads.

You are a gem!! I tried and tried with GW search and could get nothing, nada, zilch..... Your search results got me to a visual demo of grafting AND your previous posts about rootstock have let me know that before I spend BIG BUCKS on Maxifort - I should try some of the resistant varieties such as Big Beef. Big Beef seeds can be had for cheap. I am also going to experiment with Celebrity. I'm not looking for miracles or super plants just want to experiment.

Hi - Depending on the trees in question and their size, there are a 1,000 different pots out there of differing quality and material... many of which can be called 'bonsai' pots, many of which may not be, but may be suitable for early training of your trees. It is not necessary to stuff a narrow rootball immediately into a shallow pot, but such things are done over time (years) and how to do it requires some learning about root pruning, etc.... not something you would normally do in a day. Please try to provide more info on the type of trees, their size and the pots in question... I'm not sure root grafting (which you've never done in any case) is the way to go in the circumstances. One thing you might consider, depending on the type of tree and how it normally grows, is a 'cascade' pot that's tall and narrow, and part of the tree (e.g. juniper procumbens) is trained over time to hang down over the edge of the pot. I wish i had found this forum sooner. You guys are a great source of info. I live in central Pennsylvania, and we have had an unusually warm March. Last i heard, we are at 12 days so far this month above 70 degrees. The apple trees are already in the green tip stage. I do not have any more scion wood that is still dormant, so i guess i will have to wait till next year to gather more scion. Can i make my own rootstock from the suckers on my mom's tree? This is a quote i read on another web site. "The rootstock is actually a sucker that sprouted from a host tree, and sawdust is mounded up against it which causes the young trunk to sprout roots." I know there are suckers at the base of her tree- will the suckers be dwarf? And then i can bench graft next year.

LOL MissSherry, I like browsing that tree forum and I think there were a few times I had to stop and admire your restraint when you ran into that sarcasm! I added a link for some cherry rootstock, but you would need to talk to someone much smarter than me in order to find something that works on anything other than commercial cherry varieties. Do you think trimming the trees down to the ground each year would work? There would be tons of fresh new growth each year to support cats and it would keep the tree to a manageable size as well. Plus the trimmed stems make great garden stakes! Try googling the word coppice or pollarding for more info.... it's alot easier than grafting, plus the tree puts on enough growth to feed an army (of army worms?).... which would not be the case if the tree were dwarfed by grafting, which slows down the growth. Agree with John, here. Lowe's/Home Depot are not commercial nurseries, but they do buy from commercial nurseries, so the liklihood of your tree being grafted is high. I'm pretty sure you have the bud union buried. John's right, this can cause the demise of your tree, so try to unbury it if possible. And, probably not a standard tree, but much more likely a semi-dwarf, as that's the majority of citrus trees you'll see sold at the big box stores. Petiole size will vary on a tree depending on the age of the leaf, so that's normal. I highly doubt you have any rootstock shoots, and these are all your navel orange tree branches, so that's a good thing. Patty S.

I just caught your question. I may be late in providing an answer. Hope this helps anyway. I bought a video produced by the University of Vermont extension which has helped me learn about tomato grafting. The title is "Grafting Greenhouse Tomatoes with Mike Collins." Seems that it cost about ten dollars. Now, the title limits the subject to "greenhouse tomato grafting. I have done this successfully following Mike's instructions, though I have not set the results out in the garden. So I can't speak for that. If you're willing to accept a few disasters in your attempt, this is a fun exercise.

Why one would want to graft tomatoes?
I have heard grafting potato and tomato, so it grows tomato
on top and potato in the groud.

I've heard it will produce a more disease-resistant plant, at least underground, if the root stock is a disease-resistant hybrid and the top is an heirloom more prone to disease.

It's been over 2 years since the start of this thread - anyone have results to report? The University of Vermont video is now free via Johnny's Selected Seeds. I've jumped for some rootstock seed (Maxifort and Beaufort) and am ready to give grafting a try.

I'm planning to plant the "survivors" out in the garden and training to two leaders. Bad idea? Starting to wonder what I've got myself into . . .
