A sign of Spring?

I hope so. It's rainy and gloomy today but after seeing these guys on the deck I've got hope that better weather is coming.

It is! They don't usually leave for winter but the yellow feathers indicates they're getting ready for spring. The yellow feathers are only for spring and summer for mating season, the rest of the year they're brownish where the yellow is.

the american goldfinches here are still in winter colors but the pine siskins and lesser goldfinches are starting to change colors. the house finches and cassins finches are showing their red breeding colors

Those blue skies are gorgeous Konrad, reminds me of my childhood growing up on an acreage. I called spring 'the big melt'. Ubro, I hope spring is around the corner for you. I find myself antsy even at this point, daydreaming about gardening. I couldn't imagine having to wait much longer! Ostrich, the trees at work in Calgary are fully leafing out, amazing how climates differ even when so close to each other. I think microclimates are key.

I love those purple dwarf irises, woodyoak! I finally ordered some (to be delivered this fall) as I've admired them for some time. I hope they, and your other flowers, weather the ice storm. I have daffodils sprouting and budding, but nothing else. I can't remember such relentless cold weather ever before.

Interesting. I emailed the go-to turf weed person at our state university this past weekend, wondering if was too late; I also saw what danielj described. Even though my instincts told me it was too early. He replied : “anytime in next 2-3 weeks should be fine; better early than late.” Morpheus: do you have a reference for bacterial role in decline of pre-emergent activity, and the thermophilic nature of those bacteria? ( I don’t doubt it; I‘ve just never read about it ).

I thought I saw a flash of yellow yesterday too on a goldfinch. Nice picture, they look funny with the mottled yellow.
