Second brood fledged today

My second brood in the backyard fledged this morning right on schedule. So early that I missed it! When I went to put mealworms out, I found a wing with some flesh attached so I think one of the fledglings did not make it. I'll try to site them in the trees after church and do a head count.

Sounds like a raccoon. Are you sure they really fledged? You do have a raccoon baffle, right?

Yes, they fledged. Parents and siblings from first brood are feeding them in the treetops. The wing was about 25 feet from the nestbox. I have a baffle on the box. There is a later post on this subject by me. one of the babies was found dead in the box. It appeared to be about 10 days old. The wing did not belong to the dead bird in the box.

Howdy! Many Bluebirders don't get to see the babies go for a few years. I am sure you will get to join the "I saw them fledge" club soon! Do you have a somewhat wooded area near? You say you thought they would go to your "tree" meaning you only have one? The parents will have guided them to the safest nearby spot with lots of tree cover. It must not be to far off since you have seen them on the fence. Keep the meal worms out and they will bring the babies down in a week or two.

3rd nesting has fledged......

I am on my 3rd nesting I think. First one had four eggs, then the nest was abandoned. Didn't see the blues for awhile,then the eggs were on the ground. Not viable at all. 2nd nesting there were 4 eggs, two fledged, 2 died, one very small one and one normal size. 3rd nesting, 3 eggs, 3 hatched, 17 days old. Saw them at 12 days old. Havent checked since for fear premature fledging. Saw Mama this morning a couple of times at the box, saw her once this evening get an insect but didn't go to the box. Doesn't seem to be any activity around the box. Could be they have fledged. Haven't checked. I will wait a couple of more days to make sure. I don't know if I would know the difference between an adult and baby. Haven't seen any around today but one, I think it was the mother.

Well, today the rest fledged. I saw the first one go and in getting the camera, which had a dead battery, I missed the second one. The last little one did not want to leave, so mom said, ok you are on your own. She made no more visits till he got hungry and came out to join the rest. What a fun experience.

Linda can you get us a picture or have some one take a picture of the bluebird box, the surroundings, and the baffle. Pictures are worth a thousand words.

Hope we can figure it out, I don't know if I will be much help, but I know some of the more dedicated ones on this forum will be of more help.

Several birds have fledged successfully from this box. The wing was a good 25 feet away. Two birds did fledge successfully and are in the treetops now. The nest was undisturbed so I do not think anything got the bird from the nest. I think it landed on the ground and was scooped up by a predator. I really do not think a picture of the nestbox will tell us anything.

I just read my post and it seems a little curt. I'm sorry; I certainly did not mean it that way. The little dead bird in the nest was all dried out and hard as a rock. I think it had been dead for more than a week but was too large for the parents to take out. The wing that I found ~25 feet away from the box still had moist flesh on it. That's why I think it was a hawk. Although a raccoon could have taken it. There was no other sign of the bird.
