4 of 5 eggs hatched

Four of the five eggs hatched this weekend. I think something happened to one of the last three that hatched as I only ever saw two of the three after they fletched. Anyway, second successful hatch this year. The way this pair is going I may see four nestings this year. The first two baby BBs were coming to the mealworm feeders daily untill these hatched but have not seen them in a couple of days. Mom and Dad must have chased them off to fend for themselves.

My first year with bluebirds I saw the male chase away the first nesting fledges. Most years thereafter however the male has let them stay. One year during the first nesting there were three females and one male, once the second nesting eggs hatched the first nesting male dissappeared only to return once the second nesting fledged. I am assuming the male chased him off but he was allowed to return after the second nesting fledged. Funny enough the second nesting had three males and one female. How are those for odds?

Ok, that is good! I remember now. You can take it off after the blues are 7 days old but you can leave it up a bit longer if you would like. I would have it off by day 10 though. I have a wren guard on my Blues nest this year as they chose a box more in the wren territory (don't have a wren but they can show up at any time) and I wanted to be safe about it. I did it in steps...first just the front, then a short side, then a longer side...she accepted it no problem and laid six beautiful blue eggs... a first for me, never had six before, always 4 or 5. Ok so I am very new to the details of bluebirding. I am really worried that I may have chased my bluebirds away! I am learning daily more of what I should and should not do. I just put up a mealworm feeding dish for my bluebirds (that have already had and fledged one brood so far). I placed it near the nest at a place on my fenceline where they like to perch. I have seen them eating them. Yesterday, I saw them rebuilding a nest in their birdhouse, as I had cleaned out the old one. I did check on their progress this morning around 9:30am to see if they had laid any eggs and then proceeded to put out a new batch of mealworms for them. I did not take long doing any of this. I did not see them at all today and it did not seem that (other than a Chameleon who ate one of the worms when I was watching) they ate any of these mealworms as they are still in the feeder. I feel badly as I know now I should not have checked the nest this morning and waited until the afternoon. Is it likely they are gone? Is is common at all to not see them for a day or so? I so hope they will be back as they were with us last year as well. I so appreciate any input as I am so concerned...I don't want them to be gone. ):

Do you know how long she has been incubating? Blues eggs typically hatch anywhere from day 12-day 14. Mine hatched on day 13 this year however I haven't been able to tell if all six eggs hatched or not, I know for sure there were four in there on hatching day but the next day I couldn't tell at all, they were so bunched up and I haven't been able to look again due to too much wind and cool weather. Hoping to be able to check on Friday, they will be six days old then. Donna
