what's eating my fall tomatoes?

kasiaw

I've planted six healthy tomato transplants last weekend. Fast forward to Wednesday, and two plants were looking very wilted. Same story yesterday, exept for four plants wilting. By today, only one plant was not wilting. It's not lack of water; they have been watered every one or two days.

It's the first time I have this problem in eight years of growing vegetables. I started looking for possible culprits and I noticed that something has been tunneling through the top inch of soil, leaving little furrows around the plants. The furrows were well visible today and I took a couple of pictures, which you can see here. I have also noticed a few fire ants moving around in the bed.

I hope my fellow gardeners can help me answer the question: what is making those tunnels? Is this the pest that is chewing on the roots? Are ants in any way responsible? How do I control this pest?

Stumped for once,

KasiaW
