Woodcock display, Pine Warbler

Saturday night DuBois and I took our supersized spotlight-in case we heard anything suspicious-and hiked to the top of the mountain to watch the Woodcock aerial display. We arrived just as they started and watched for 45 minutes..perfect seats. Since the moon was half full we had plenty of light.

Male Woodcocks began flying in right over our heads into the field just below us where they took turns twittering in sweeping circles higher and higher until they almost disappeared into the moon. Then they'd start spiraling down, now chirping at an increasing speed until they suddenly dropped straight down like a piece of wood into the field. After a brief pause they'd start a nasal "beeent" to call in female admirers.

We were so tickled; several circled around us fairly closely. Then, exactly 45 minutes later, the field fell silent. I turned to DuBois and remarked, "Nothing left but Woodcocks sweeping out the bleachers and collecting trash."

Since the local wildlife got wise, our Cuddeback flash game camera is no longer getting any photos. I was reminded why when it flashed right in our eyes coming down the hill..blinding me for a minute.

(Got to spring for an infra-red now)

Yesterday the Pine Warblers were singing everywhere. This male was by our pond when I went up to change the Cuddeback SD card
