You can get Wasp and Hornet killer in an aerosol spray at the supermarket or hardware store. right there along side of the Roach and Ant killer. just aim, spray and run as you are going to make them angry. It may take a couple of really good soakings to do the job. It won't hurt the bush. PB

Robins are birds that I enjoy viewing, but not as they try to build nests under our porch lights which are on both sides of an area right by our front entrance door. For three days my husband has removed the straw, twigs, etc in order to prevent a completed robin's nest. They put the straw, twigs, etc. up, he takes them down immediately. Today after reading these posts, I sprayed the area with ant and roach spray that I use when the ants try to visit too close to our outside walkway. Two robins just came with straw in their mouths, but they flew away. I hope this is a long-term solution. This is the first time that we have had this problem in the nineteen years that we have lived here. I am already tired of the mess on our porch and the potential health hazard presented if the robins succeed in building a permanent nest. We have plenty of trees that the birds usually choose for their nests and are still quite welcome to do so. However, why our porch this year is a puzzle. Thanks to all who have posted for their solutions. To the haters, because one does not want a bird's nest in an area that he/she frequently uses in his/her home, does not label the person as an animal hater. Why should my quality of life be compromised daily upon trying to enter my home for the sake of a bird's nest? The answer is that it shouldn't and will not. We will win this fight and reclaim our safety and keep our good health.

I was afraid that might be the case, they all look around the same size (martins) and info I found today said that the martins usually start to arrive here in February and look for nesting spots. In addition to All the other potential dangers/problems with the house/location where these martins are possibly planning to nest and raise babies, same neighbors also have a HAMM RADIO tower in their back yard and every year around late spring/ summer a great horned owl perches up there on and off and and hoots, I've heard him and seen him up there several nights in a row before. Is there anything I can do at this point, like put up a safe Martin house, or will they stay there now regardless? I'm hoping that if I talk to neighbors and explain the situation, they will do something about it. I feel sick at the thought of the martins going through whole process and end up losing babies or being harmed themselves. If I thought there was a possibility that they would relocate this late in the game, I'd gladly put up a safe place for them to nest and make sure it stays that wAy, although I'd be learning as I go, ughh, whole situation makes me nervous. I'm going to post the pics of the house and the birds tonight, I'm pretty sure the house is not the ideal layout either, it has little porches with metal railings on both floors and another railing across top and from what I've read so far, that makes it easy for owls to get to them. Hi Andrea- Congratulations! So glad they're back! I love Chickadees too. They have a hard time getting & keeping nests too, so maybe you'll get them another time. Once the nest is complete, you could see the 1st egg any time. Mine laid their 1st egg 24 hours after they completed the nest. I've got 6 5-day old nestlings right now. Praying they will fledge successfully. Definitely get that sparrow spooker up as soon as you notice that 1st egg. I've had a male HOSP approach box twice that I know of, but he didn't enter, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed. Do you have a baffle below box to combat other predators? That is so sad about those birds freezing last February. So awful! It's easy to get attached, isn't it? EABL keep their nests so clean & are so attentive to their young.
