Purple Martins and house sparrows nesting in same house??

My neighbors have had a birdhouse in their backyard since we moved in, I saw something on tv about purple Martin houses and colonies and realized that the house in their yard was a purple Martin house. I've never seem any birds other than house sparrows around and in the house, but a few weeks ago, I noticed a different bird and was able to get some pics of them and figured out they were martins. I've been watching them(through binoculars) for past few weeks, and apparently, these martins are nesting in the top floor of the house and house sparrows are nesting in bottom floor, and as far as I have been able to see, they don't seem to bother each other, is it possible for sparrows and martins to share a house without problems? I've read about sparrows running martins out and pinning eggs and killing Martin babies so i wanted to ask to see if this is always the case. I haven't seen any really small martins in house, there are a few with whitish breast/belly and not sure if that's juvenile martins or what. Also I have no clue when martins or sparrows nest in my area (baton rouge, la) and hoping that this won't turn into a bad situation. I can't really do anything about it since I don't own the birdhouse or property it's sitting on and I know the neighbors don't keep the bird house up and I doubt of they even realize there are martins living in it. I will post the pics I have later when I'm near a computer. But wanted to see if anyone has had any experience with this kind of situation or has any info that would be helpful. Thanks!
