I would leave the nest as it will save the bluebirds the trouble of having to start from scratch. I would keep the wren guard in place, but it sounds like the wren got in anyway. We had a box with a rectangle opening that the wrens preferred, so we took it down. We only use the small round hole openings with a wren guard. We kept finding a wren in our yard but my husband bought a small air gun (like a BB gun but without the metal pellets) & fired it at the wren & it doesn't come around anymore.

We have a bluebird pair who built a nest in two different boxes, had one clutch in one of the boxes (1 died because a wire grate at bottom of box trapped baby's leg and it couldn't get out, so we removed the grate). The bluebirds are now checking out the second box with nest and may lay another clutch.

I'm so sorry to hear about the loss of your bluebird's eggs. They are persistent, so I'll bet they lay another clutch, usually within 1 week if the first clutch was unsuccessful. If the clutch was a success, they may wait around 30days.

I am so sorry to hear of what the house wren did. I just had a house wren attack. In the last 3 years, I've had titmouse eggs pecked and thrown out of the box, just-hatched bluebird checks thrown out of the nest two nights in a row, just-hatched chickadee chicks thrown out of the box...they are relentless!!!!!!!!!!!

I've left the nest in the box. If the bluebirds want to nest again, I'll have to try harder to protect them.
