A couple years ago my husband and kids built two bluebird boxes. Although we have bluebirds, none have chosen to use the boxes. We did have a tufted titmouse family one summer.
The past couple of days I've seen a pair of bluebirds. Maybe, oh maybe we'll have bluebirds this year? Uh, maybe not. They are showing no interest in the nest box. No, they are showing quite the interest in... the bat box. Mind you, it's way high up in the tree, much higher than the experts say to put a bluebird box. And, of course, the opening is a slit at the bottom of the box. They can't figure it out. All I can do is shake my head.
