happy surprise

This is my first season to carefully observe bluebirds, although a pair nested last year while I we were working on the house but we weren't here all the time to enjoy the daily dramas.

Last week I checked the box and was thrilled to find three eggs. This evening I checked again and there are now five. Yay!!!! You'd think I laid them myself.

My students are appalled that I have no pets, and think I should get a cat (not going to happen), and are amused I talk about murderous house sparrows. I can't wait to show them my bluebird egg picture tomorrow!

Congratulations! I remember finding the first bluebird eggs last year and how excited I was. And I was just excited when I found the 2nd set and the 3rd. There have been some heartaches and tears along the way, but the joy makes up for it.

This is a wonderful place to get advice. Keep the link handy.

Hi Betty, welcome! COngratulations on your first BB eggs. I hope that your nestbox is on a metal pole with a raccoon baffle. That is the best set-up for a successful BB nestbox. There is a TERRIFIC website that we all love because it offers complete information and the answers to any questions or concerns you have as the breeding season progresses. Please enjoy browsing through the website and if you have any concerns, questions or anything that you just want to share we look forward to hearing from you.

And by the way how old are your students?

Sadly I had to shut my pond down Wednesday. I always wait till the last minute. It snowed Thursday and the top two ponds are frozen over. I always do a frog check to be sure nobodys trying to overwinter in the small ponds that freeze. I dread shutting it down and so look forward to un tenting and starting it up as early as possible in the spring. Sniff sniff night fishies :(

Stuff that has always come through for me was disappointing ..echinacea, asters, larkspur ..(I have about 30 two litres with nothing happening)..not giving up, just moved them to the side of the shed where I can't see them. However, I have Catalpa sprouts, datura going like gangbusters, Peruvian corn (grows 15 feet tall, I swiped a cob from a municipal park). Seems like the normally difficult germinators did o.k., and old faithfulls suffered this spring. Just my 2 cents.

I'm happy that I got the cuttings of what I ordered from UCD, but they sure didn't send me any of these wonderful long cuttings like everyone else has gotten. I got one of one variety and two of another and I'm beginning to feel like an unwelcome stepchild. :( I really happy that I did get the two varieties I wanted, though, but gee..... noss

Happy little surprises?

I absolutely love this!! The color is so fun. I have a similar happy little surprise. The linen closet in the upstairs hall of our 1980s townhouse had awful 7 inch shelves in a 11.5 inch deep closet, so I remedied that by buying and painting proper sized shelves (still have to replace the horrible metal door, but that's another story). Before I put the shelves in, I painted a silly little zig-zag chevron design down the back. I know chevron is "out," but it was easy to do with painters tape and makes me smile every time I open the door, much like yours :) three pics are before, during, and after.
