happy surprise

This is my first season to carefully observe bluebirds, although a pair nested last year while I we were working on the house but we weren't here all the time to enjoy the daily dramas.

Last week I checked the box and was thrilled to find three eggs. This evening I checked again and there are now five. Yay!!!! You'd think I laid them myself.

My students are appalled that I have no pets, and think I should get a cat (not going to happen), and are amused I talk about murderous house sparrows. I can't wait to show them my bluebird egg picture tomorrow!

Congratulations! I remember finding the first bluebird eggs last year and how excited I was. And I was just excited when I found the 2nd set and the 3rd. There have been some heartaches and tears along the way, but the joy makes up for it.

Hi Betty, welcome! COngratulations on your first BB eggs. I hope that your nestbox is on a metal pole with a raccoon baffle. That is the best set-up for a successful BB nestbox. I'm happy that I got the cuttings of what I ordered from UCD, but they sure didn't send me any of these wonderful long cuttings like everyone else has gotten. I got one of one variety and two of another and I'm beginning to feel like an unwelcome stepchild. :( I really happy that I did get the two varieties I wanted, though, but gee..... noss

Sariah's Curly pink is notorious for producing pods of that size. Part of me hates the pods because it really slows down the following year's bloom. My TMG just opened its second inflo on a 7 tip plant after it had 5 double pods. There is at least one set on TMG already and Pink Pansy has some too. Also an Unnamed TMG seedling (from Jandy's stock) which bloomed for the first time has pods forming too. Babies having babies. No doubt due to the absentee father.

thyrkas, you have just given me a book-related happy surprise. Re your book club and your hunt for The Sojourner I was reminded that as a result of listening to a BBC production several years ago of Saplings by Noel Streatfeild (one of her adult rather than children's works) I had been unable to find a copy anywhere . . . and was planning to add something to your thread asking why there are not 'tie-ins' between publishers and the BBC, although I realise that something similar between a publisher and a book club might not be practical. So I looked up Saplings and Bingo! It has recently been republished (2009) by Persephone Books which specialises in reprinting once popular books mostly by women writers.
