I would wager, there are plenty around. Red bellies are very common in my part of the state. We usually have 3 pairs hanging around our feeders. Downies are the most common; hairies are rarer. Flickers are common, but we can't seem to draw them in. Pileateds and red heads are the rarest---although I had a horde of the red heads attacking my fruits last year. While we have loads of white breasted nuthatches, red bellied nuthatches have been like your red bellied woodpeckers. We've only seen one at a time.

I'll admit, I've never seen more than 1 at a time either, here is southwestern MN.

I usually see only one at a time, but a few weeks ago there were at least three chasing each other around across the street. I hear them more than I see them here in Plymouth, MA.

On Feb. 19, 2008, I saw a male and female together on a tube feeder - it had the feeling of a first date for woodpeckers.
