I May Have Made A Mistake...Need Advice !

Though this is a bluebird forum, I know you can help. I have dees nesting and I was quite sure the babies had fledged sometime in the last two days or so. I had not seen Mama Dee fly into the box in awhile, and too, I was positive I heard the fledglings fluttering about in the trees. The dees were at the feeders this morning and I didn't see Mama fly in the direction of the box. So, this afternoon, I decided to check the box and remove the nest. I even took my dental mirror and saw nothing so I opened the box and began gently removing the nest, lifting carefully from the bottom and it slide out easily...To my surprise, there sat three baby dees!!! They just looked at me, not upset in the least..I was the one who was upset and panic set in! I quickly put the nest back in the box!

Now I am extremely worried that Mama has left these babies and that I inadvertently may have caused a problem for these babies and parents! They do appear close to fledging.

I know there is nothing I can do but leave well enough alone, but do you think everything will be OK and how will I know if they are still being cared for by Mom? I just can't believe the chicks were still there! My mistake is really bothering me..I should have been more observant!!! Your thoughts and advice are appreciated.

First, you are so lucky to have Chickadees nesting with u, I am so jealous. I think they will be fine. They are probably the last 3 to leave the nest. I am sure the parents will call them out of the nest. Do keep us posted.

Donna Dees are really quick coming and going so you may just be missing her. It is very hard to just sit and look at the box all day. You can always try the old grass in the hole trick. Then you'll know the parents are still going in. I'm sure they're just fine.

viche, The "crankcase" is the accepted term for the reservoir of the engine oil, as it is on your car, too. No need to be apologetic...most of us "engine-heads" are just on here to help when it's remotely possible that we can. As I mentioned in my prior post, your engine will not even notice the bit of slightly different oil...absolutely no need to change your fresh oil again in the Spring. I mentioned grounding the plug to the cylinder while cranking to have you avoid any possible damage to your ignition circuitry. The very high voltage generated by the solid-state ignition module wants somewhere to go to ground....like a lightning strike does. You want it to go to a common grounded piece of your mower, or it will try to find a path of least resistance....and possibly damage a component part of your Toro ignition system. By grounding your plug (hex or thread part) to a cylinder fin, that risk is eliminated (is that clear as mud? ~grin~) You "just dangled" the plug the last time, and got away with it. Next time...you may not. Now relax, throw another log on the fire, and enjoy the Holiday Season. It's a bit less than 13 weeks 'til Spring! Regards, Hal

Lainey, I agree with Ken's "P.S." Shipping and depotting causes great shock to hostas, and they will sometimes do weird stuff. In addition, if a hosta has been used to total shade, and it is then placed in more sun than it's used to, they can go into shock. Also, I have seen what is most definitely a nutrient deficiency look something like HVX. If you got your plants from John (diggindutchman, hostabargains on ebay), you can guarantee that he will make the situation right for you. I have bought from John before and he is an absolutely honest seller and would never intentionally sell you a plant with HVX. I can tell you from personal experience that I bought a hosta from John last summer, and when it arrived it looked great. I did the exact same thing as you and soaked it for a couple days, but when I finally planted it outside, it started looking terrible. Turns out, the hosta was getting more sun than it was used to getting at John's place. I had to place a lawn chair over it, and give it extra-extra water, and it turned out fine. However, just in case the original one died, John sent me a duplicate hosta. Both of them ended up surviving wonderfully, and both came back this year. Just wanted to share this because I think sometimes people jump to the conclusion of HVX, when it could be transplant shock?? Perhaps you can post a picture? As for the aphids I was trying to attract them to the vinegar which kills them. And that is the primary mis-understanding. You never want to attract them to anything for any reason. They may or may not come all on their own and if they don't why attract them. Plus plain water can kill them too without any risk to the plants. So please get rid of these vinegar and soap containers from near your plants. They pose much more of a threat than even aphids do. While flooding the area will dilute the soap and vinegar it will also flood the plant roots. Since they are only a week old I'd probably move them to an uncontaminated spot. As for seeds it may have contacted, I'd plan on having to re-seed once the area has been flushed out well. Dave

All is well with the dees!!! I saw Mama dee fly out of the box this morning, so needless to say, I'm relieved. I can just imagine what she was thinking if she was perched somewhere watching as I removed the nest!! The babies are adorable and should be fledging in the next day or so...at least I THINK so! Thanks.

Oh Donna, so glad you saw Momma Dee, thankfully they babies didn't try to fledge when you took out the nest. I am sure they are just fine though. I wish I could get some nesting dees. =)

Hi Donna, i'm glad that all is well. It's such a relief when our "mistakes" turn out ok after all. I guess that mama is bonded tightly to her babies and she wasn't a'scared of you! Thanks goodness.

Donna, perhaps mom tucked in her babes when she left the nest-just like when they cover the eggs.

Sometimes, it's hard to see what is in those nests with all the fluff they put in. Happy to hear all is well. What dear little birds they are!
