Duck ID

Are these Goldeneye? Drake in back, misses in the front? Whatbird.com has pics of common goldeneye, similar, but not exactly.

Wish I could closer. They certainly are wary of people, probably for a good reason.

Guess they will be in the Adirondacks next week, then on to Canada.

Just to add, I saw several pairs earlier in the week in a different pond. Thought they were Mallards. Until I saw them diving. And hanging out with Mergansers.

I live Bushland Tx just west of Amarillo,my greenhouse is 20x30x12,facing south, west wall is R-panels rest of the greenhouse is Lexan poly,so far has stood up to many heavy hailstorms and strong winds,80mph.but I used metal tubing and channel for a frame,a portion of my greenhouse is dedicated to 5 tropical parrots,so I have propane heaters,I built flower beds on south side and west side, about 2 ft deep and tall and wide,as this really helps holding the heat inside, like yours mine is a lean too and northside is the backside of my house,I grow tropicals such as bananas and palms, planted in the ground,so my greenhouse never gets below 50*,we seldom get much snow but last year we got 21 inches and I had snow drifts over 6 feet on the roof of my greenhouse, which buckled the 8inch c channel, lucky enough got it time to but 4x6 timber under it to keep it from crashing down,so build yours as to expect anything that might come your way..

Need help with duck id

I need help IDing a duck. It was slightly larger than a mallard, had a pink bill with black/brown mottling/ had a black head with a white ring around the eye, a white ring around its neck, a light grey back, its legs seemed to be set further back on its body than the mallard (which leads me to believe it may be a diving duck?) and were a brownish grey color, and its tail was fairly wide and stuck up like a ruddy duck, but it was WAY bigger than a ruddy duck and other than the tail, looked nothing like a ruddy duck. It was the only one of its kind with some local mallards (4-5 drakes in eclipse plumage, 4-5 females, and about 5 or 6 of this year's juveniles), in a slow moving small creek (maybe 20-30 ft across and maybe 3 ft deep at the deepest). Can't figure out what this duck is, maybe a hybrid, a juvenile, or a drake in eclipse plumage, or some combination??? Any help or directions to who (or where) I should go for help would be appreciated!

Lesser Scaup.

Although this male duck has a peaked head resembling a Lesser Scaup, the green metallic sheen on the head suggests Greater Scaup. Lesser Scaup have a purple sheen on the head. As a hunter, I have harvested both of these species and the color of the sheen on the head is a good way to determine species when you can't see the amount of white on the wing.

As mentioned I had seen some pairs closer to the road on another local deep pond earlier in the week. They were mixed in with some common mergansers. Definitely a green head on the drakes. At a quick glance I mistook them for mallard drakes, but seemed very strange that they were mixed in with Common Mergansers (who seem to really dislike mallards)

So probably is Greater Scaup,
