HOSP bypassed trap

I put a trap inside the birdhouse and caught a HOSP the first day. I reset it the next day, and saw a HOSP fly into and stick his head out the hole. I went to look and the trap didn't go off - it is still in set position.

Does anyone know if it's common for HOSP to get around the trap? I can't imagine they would be able to build a nest around the trap, so eventually he'd be caught.
