That bluebird has a furry face and no beak!

Checking our bluebird houses last weekend here in central MO, we saw a little face looking out of one. But it had black eyes, tan fur and no beak. Judging from the head alone, it looked like a chipmunk!

The next day we opened up that box and found it half full of very soft stuff like moss, fur etc. We dumped it out thinking that was probably not a bluebird nest anyway. Found the same thing in another box and cleaned that one out as well.

This is a heavily wooded area and the boxes are in the only open space which is a 50-ft. wide utility line corridor out to the road. We've seen bluebirds but never confirmed any nesting.

Do these sound like bluebird nests and maybe the chipmunk was a visitor, or did we guess right that they are not bluebird nests?
