When??

Had 1 st Bluebirds last year here near Annapolis, Maryland. BB's fed babys on 5-11, assuming eggs were laid about 14 plus days before BUT when should I expect to see first nest building or site checking in this area this year?? Thanks, Allan

Any time now. I think it depends on weather and maturity of the birds. The experienced ones seem to nest sooner than the inexperienced ones. I'm way up in MA and I have a nest with eggs already. However, two years ago I had a pair that didn't start nesting until the end of April.

Hi Allan,

I'm in Arnold MD, a few miles away. My blues stayed the winter, and built a nest last week. No eggs yet!

Well, its been two nights since I put up the solar electric fence and all is well. The unit was $99(3 mile - smallest TSC had) plus about $20 for wire and plastic insulators. Hoped it would have been cheaper but was in a rush and very determined...I already had some rebar for posts which I cut into 1/3's and had to buy a few more lengths. Pretty easy. As Grandad suggested, I put the wires at 6" and 12" off the ground and one foot away from the base of the existing fence. I made the gate swing in. The unit is mounted to a 4x4 post and has an on off switch. Still wishing I did this a while ago. Not much corn left...I'm noticing a few late ears trying to form. I may have to hand pollenate these. Every stalk had at least two ears, some have had 3 ears and apparently a couple that may end up with 4 if you include the sucker. I'm curious about watering the garden while/if the fence is on. Any need to be concerned - precautions???lol I have one grounding rod - 3/8 rebar 4' in the ground. Was told rebar would be suffice for this application vs. the more expensive copper grounding rod. I kinda gathered that more/multiple grounding rods made for a stronger shock. Is this true or necessary for this small of a fence? We both tried the fence and felt it...

How long since you began the air layer? Did you thoroughly wet the moss/soil before wrapping, and tie it hard? You can periodically unwrap and check the roots. When the bag is pretty full of roots its ready to go. I did this years ago with a Ficus elastica of my mom's that got all leggy. I've also air layered a Forsythia bush in the garden for bonsai.

I decided to check the sears outlet and the best buy outlet. I got my ideal appliances for about half price and they were all brand new never been used one had been store displayed, one was an open box, and the stove had a small scratch on the side which will never be seen with it in place and was barely noticeable to begin with. The guy at sears was great, since we bought a few things there he gave us a big discount plus when they found out that we were flood victims they did even better. Never hesitate to ask for a best price. I am thrilled with all of my appliances they were exactly the ones I wanted but never thought I could afford because of the flood expense. Check out those outlets! I agree 100% with satisficing! We always went to the habitat restore store first to see if they might have what we needed before going shopping elsewhere. That paid off hugely in tile. We found the perfect tile for the guest bathroom for 70c sqft, porcelain tile name brand that we had seen at the tile store for so much more. We bought all the new outlet plates and switches there for a few dollars for a bag full. Door handles, sets of lever handles in the brushed nickel for $3 a set good brand. I can't even tell you how much we saved there. Very few things we bought were used most was brand new. I know not every store is the same. We had to have a strict budget because we had the fema insurance money to work with and there was zero paid for our contents just structure. If you make your self be disciplined and keep good guidelines it's easier. I have the faucet I wanted, but I got a great deal on it with discount codes. I asked my granite guy to throw in the exact sink I wanted he did. If shopping Lowe's or home Depot ask to talk to the manager tell them you are going to be buying a major amount of stuff from building material to tile and lighting and electrical etc will they give you a discount on all your purchases if you get it all from them. Lowe's gave us 10 % off of everything plus using our Lowe's card gave us an additional 5% off. It was a huge bonus for us. With out that kind of stuff I would never have been able to have the kitchen I love. And the master bathroom and the other bathrooms etc lol.

Yes even though the capping material is thin, your feet are "programmed" neurologically by two steps, for the remaining steps, and if the first or last one is relatively higher or lower than the rest it can create a tripping problem (too high) or a too tall last step on the way down which can give you a jolt even though it is a relatively small difference. There is a video I've seen of people walking out of a subway and there is something wrong with one of the steps --it's temporarily slightly off, and it shows dozens of people tripping in that spot on the way up.

Hey neighbor!

I have been very lucky---my blues stayed both winters since all this started. I don't know for sure if my current couple is the original couple or another generation, but....it's fine either way!

Keeping them here year round has been an enormous amount of work---I'm raising mealworms, and every morning, 365 days a year, I put our mealworms. I recommend this to keep them in your yard, BUT....it has really taken over my life.

Do you have mealworms out now?

Is anyone else checking out your house?

I too live in MD(white marsh),You should have house shopping going on now,I have had house shopping since the first part of April,On todays check,I now have three pairs of Blues building,and 6 pairs of Chickadees building,most of the building started this past week.Have you seen any Blues at your boxes this season?

Not yet Matt- Gettin' a LITTLE nervous!! But it was late (mid April last year) I live on the Bay 100 ft from water. Thanks 4 the reply. I will let U know if anything happens. Any idea about my Q on the 7 or 8 BB's checking out the house in late fall for 15 min. ??? Al

Hello all you fellow Marylanders! My first hatching of the season happened today at my school trail. The second box on that trail should have hatching tomorrow. I have eggs on all 4 trails but no nesting here at the house as of yet. I'm happy to see that the wind is finally dying down--there are bluebirds everywhere!

Pop pokes his head in & out every couple of Mom's trips -checking on her building. WHEN is he going to get off his TAIL & bring some grass too?? ( Bring me a beer hon & is dinner ready yet ??) LOL Al

Congrats, Allan and GO BLUES! Your male is typical, Allan, he only supervises! Best to leave the real work to the female and, if she's like most of us females, she'll wait until he's not looking and put things the way she wants them. Keep us posted on eggage!

Ha ha, Allan. Actually, I think that's an excellent question. I would guess, since they put themselves in the face of danger to protect the female bluebird and their young, that may just be the case. Also, with their flashier coloring they're much more visible than the duller tones of the female which adds to their vulnerability. I think we should pass this question on to our friend Bet who does the sialis.org site and hear what she has to say. Bet? Any stats on this?
