Dead female bluebirds

I have found 3 female bluebirds, all with 5 eggs in the nest, dead about 5 or 10 feet from the box. I have had these same bluebird boxes for years and this has never happened before. I clean the boxes every year so all nests are new. Has anyone else had this problem or does anyone have an idea what may be happening? This is very distressing. Thanks for your help.

Oh, how sad. Of course you are distressed. I believe you are saying all the eggs are still in the boxes? Do you have sparrow spookers up on the boxes? The only thing I can think of that would kill all 3 bluebirds, but not eat them would be house sparrows. Are you seeing any house sparrows now trying to use the boxes?

Sandy My neighbor has horses too and a few years ago the hosps had taken over almost all of the barn swallow nests in the barn. They like all swallows eat TONS of bugs. She also wanted Bluebirds. I told her I wouldn't help her unless she were willing to get rid of the hosps and use spookers and such. Long story short I finally convinced her she need to get rid of the hosps so I started trapping there. She now has all of her barn swallows back and I have nine boxes there full of Bluebirds and Tree Swallows. We could probably have Purple Martins too if she were willing to buy a house or a gourd system (better) that has the starling resistant entrances. It is kind of time consuming and continuous but well worth it. Cathy

Nicole!!! How I have missed you! I have 12 day olds thriving so far. Hunkering down so no cute photos. Praying for their safety. Have you caught a glimpse of your two fledges? Fingers crossed! I had five eggs but only count four beaks so I don't know if there's another one in the pig pile or an unhatched egg somewhere. At any rate, will be doing much better than last year if second nesting survives.

The male will not incubate the eggs. Its best to get rid of the eggs and hopefully he will find another mate and use the same nesting spot.

So sorry this has happened. I would think if it were HOSP the momma would be dead in the nest, not that far away from the box. Did you look them over at all and see any marks? Hope you can figure out what is happening.

Had anyone used pesticides/insecticides in your area?
