Sad news

Was gone all day yesterday (Sat) and today were doing yard work so I thought I'd check on my BB nest and I found 1 egg missing and one egg with a whole in it and I checked out the other 4 eggs and they seem to be ok but haven't seen the blues since 5:30 am .... so I don't know what got to the eggs because I have the wren guard up but I haven't heard any wrens or seen them I hope Mama doesn't give up on the 4 ... and I was so excited about 6 eggs.

Aww man, sorry about the eggs! It sure sounds like a wren though, not sure what else would do that. Hope you see your momma blue on the nest, had she started incubating? If so and she isn't now she may have given up on it.

She had been sitting since Friday and I have't seen her all day the Daddy blue has been hanging around and flying up and checking in the hole but I haven't seen the Mama since yesterday morning, I quess I'll just keep a close eye for the next several days. My husband said with the baffle that it just doesn't seem like it could of been a snake, I'm thinking about getting barbed wire and wrapping the pole with it just because we have stray cats roaming the woods now also. Seems like everyone is having a rough year this year with the Blues.

Joanie-we have tried every avenue we can think of about the neighbor. Unfortunately our County Code is very lax. We are literally one block away from City limits and their Code Enforcement is strict! But the County just doesn't have it written in code, so they have no teeth. I'm considering a run for County Commissioner when I retire so I can get some changes made to that code. But by then we'll probably be annexed into the City!

mr1010, I had the same thing happen with my cockatiels. I had one mother who was just letting her babies starve. It was my first clutch of babies, so I didn't recognize what was going on until one baby died. I had to hand-raise the rest of them. Every time she laid eggs, I had to put them into the other female's nest because she somehow just didn't have that nurturing gene. Since butterflies don't nurture their young, I truly believe it has to be something genetic or chemical they pass on that makes them migrate. If the parents have never migrated, they aren't going to pass that on to their offspring. Andy 49, The dilemma was have here is that there are native Florida monarchs, but we don't know which is laying on our plants. I agree to just let nature take its course. I lose more than I have hatch, but other critters have to survive too. I love my lizards and even my wasps, so if I have to sacrifice a few monarchs, so be it.

Sad new ninebark

It's kind of hard to kill a nine bark, one of the toughest I've ever planted. Many years ago I picked up 8 ninebarks from Menards for free they were going to toss, dried up sticks in a pot best describes them. From the dead they came back to life with a little care, just some water, so planted them and they grew like weeds. I still have two I never water because they're under the drip line of a building roof where they get flooded every time it rains and grow 6 plus feet high in one summer even after I cut them down to the ground. I do it because they grow to high and trying to top them is not possible because just trimming the weeping branches make them grow wild and they look like a bad hair day every day. So I'll say with confidence you can't over water them and once established can't kill them unless you pull out the root ball, and what I had to do with the others I planted in stupid locations around the yard.

Oh no. Terrible and disappointing news for you dee. Well, it sounds like it was either a House Sparrow or a House Wren. Do you have a spooker on the box dee? These attacks can happen so quickly, and you may never see the culpits. If dad is still there, that is good at least. Keep an eye out for mom. She may still be around. Did you remove the egg with the hole in it? Was it a pinprick type hole or a larger gouge? They say that the Wrens make pinprick type holes and the House Sparrow make bigger gouges.
