Remember the snow bunting post?

These birds were feasting on wheat, ..got me thinking, the other day I went back and pulled some wheat out, made a bundle and hung it into a tree on a string [hanging] at home, what bird do you think got interested in?

How about Pine Siskins, Purple Finches or Goldfinches? (if you have any goldies up there in winter) Maybe Juncos? if you have them in winter.

Joe many many thanks for that. My hubby suggested it also but we couldn't find confirmation anywhere at all, and still can't but I'm definately putting Mistletoe as our answer. Have read pages on Druids, Pagans, witches, botany, you name it we've looked at it. The quiz is for our local village church and if we are lucky enough to win a prize, usually there's a Christmas hamper, wine and chocs, you have an invite to share with us!! Personally, I wouldn't do anything to it but might change my mind based on fotos :-) This is a dwarf Hinoki cypress that is quite shrubby in habit and never gets very big (maybe 10 feet over a very long lifetime) -- I have seen numerous examples with multiple "leaders" (not true "leaders" per se but rather just low branching, common to a lot of cultivars of Chamaecyparis obtusa). And Hinokis have strong wood. Unless you experience very heavy snow or ice loads, I doubt you will have any problems.

Since I was the one who made the post, I feel like I should chime in about all the negative comments. Geesh, people, it's just a quiz...and it doesn't collect personal information. And it doesn't promote anything...from what I can tell, it indicates that hybrids have superior disease resistance and reliability and that heirlooms have superior flavor. Anybody want to contest that? OK, I admit, it's very basic, way too basic for most people on this listserv. But that's no reason to trash it. And that it's made by a seed company? Horrors! How dare they want to sell seeds! This is the kind of attitude Wikipedia has...they don't let companies provide information...and yet in today's world, often it's commercial interests that ARE providing the best information. Does anyone think that Extension websites are necessarily a better source of gardening info than, say, Dave's Garden website? C'mon people... Blue Jay,..about 3 of them are coming almost every morning, so light is not all that great, have 3 frames with canon rebel, one after the other, the last picture with canon powershot.

How fun! Nobody guessed and this is quite the knowledgeable forum! Love the pic with the wheat seedhead between his/her feet. Blue Jays are such handsome birds.

One morning we had 5 of them!...looks like they're calling their friends, staying only for about 5 minutes, take out
what they like and gone.

Very interesting...and yes, they certainly are beautiful birds - among my favorites at the feeder. Do you think they're taking the wheat to eat it, or are they using it for nesting material? Is it too early for them to start nesting?
