Hi Christin, I'm so excited to come across an old comment of yours that you have Red Bird In a Tree seeds available. I've been searching for this plant for a while to no avail. When I saw Burgess Seeds carries it I was so excited and placed an order for it but instead they had substitute me with another plant which I do not want. Previously, I've also bought seeds from Ebay but they failed to germinate. I hope that you still have the seeds available. I'd like to buy some from you or send you some stamps in a SASE for it. Strange , I just bought one from High Country Gardens this week and am looking for a spot for it. I have it in a larger pot hardening off to the sun. True, my problems are not your problems. I killed one in a granite sand/compost mixture with hot sun exposure in Central Texas. I probably forgot to water it. Me bad. I have read that it will take full sun to dappled shade. gritty soil to regular garden soil. I have read that it grows in North facing moist canyons of the Mimbres Mountains in Southern New Mexico in the 6,000'- 8,000', west of Las cruces. I don't think it gets lower than 6,000' around there. These are igneous mountains. I have grown many plants from the mountains of Texas (same elevation sky island) . This time, I am going to give it more shade and more humous to keep it cooler at these lower hotter elevations, But pile in the coarse granite sand for drainage and give it more soil above the calcarious marl. I do actually have 6-9" of topsoil there. That's a lot for me. . It is on a sloping area and I am on a hill, so the drainage is VERY good here . I hope it will forgive me the limestone substrata that I have.. I have the northeast side of an Oak tree on a north facing slope of the beginnings of a canyon.. that might be the ticket. They say it grows in the Pinyon/juniper forest. That tells me it is not too high up so it should be getting some heat in its native digs. It is midrange on the mountain. Also some grow on the canyon floor. I did read that a woman is having success in Llano Texas but she is growing on a granite uplift area. So that is a bit more similar to an igneous mountain., BUT that granite area is hotter in the summertime than my limestone area. Off to the store to buy some granite sand/compost mixture. I have other plants unknown to me, that are making me scratch my head. I guess I am pushing the envelope again. I hope we do not have the floods that we had last year. I hope these plants can deal with a bit of hot humidity and hot nights..That is my problem.
