Sandhill Cranes

We have Sandhill Cranes come over our house on a frequent basis (evidently we are on a migration 'line' to a lot of the cranes) and today they did something that I'd like your opinions on. I'm assuming that the 'v's' turning into more of a flock and circling is the cranes taking advantage of a thermal? There were about 5 different v's that came over and with all the circling there was a great deal of forming and reforming as they sorted themselves out on their way. I'm guessing that I could see this activity for approximately 1/4 to 1/2 mile.
If there's one advantage to where we live it's the cranes and, occasionally Wood storks, that come overhead. Makes my day to see and hear them.
Thanks,
Ging
