Could one or two of you experienced vets tell this novice the average time it takes a BB to build a nest and more importantly after the nest is built when the first egg is usually laid? Thanks, Al Annapolis, Md

Ha ha, Allan. You're telling a joke and probably don't even realize it! Habits are different from bird to bird and from season to season and just when you think you have the particulars pinned down, you don't. I swear sometimes I think the bluebirds all gather somewhere, watch us worry over their nestings, and laugh. Generally, I'd say a bluebird can take anywhere from a couple of days to a couple of weeks to build a nest but on average probably a week is a good bet. Much quicker, though, for 2nd and 3rd nestings of the season. Sometimes eggs will appear within days, especially later nestings, but at the beginning of nesting season they often wait literally weeks! I'd say that, again on average, they usually wait a couple of days after nestbuilding is complete before laying the first egg.

Keep in mind that my estimations are based on the experiences with my particular bluebirds and even those vary between each of my trails. In my humble opinion, there isn't any hard and fast rule when it comes to nesting. You'd think that would make us less stressed--it'll happen when it happens, kind of thing--but no, we pace, watch the nestbox, check repeatedly . . . . . .

I'm not formally trained in this, but I've studied it some, and would offer these opinions: If I understand you correctly,the 4 brass vents around your firebox, 2 to the right and left slightly above it and 2 to the right and left close to the hearth, are connected to a duct system that circulates air that has been heated by the fire. There may be a blower fan connected to the ducts to promote greater circulation of heated air into the room. Whether you have a blower fan or not probably does not matter. So you want to cover these vents for cosmetic reasons in your re-design of the fireplace. I think there might be a concern if you are covering the vents with combustible material (wood), for 2 reasons. (1) If the air in the duct system gets very hot, it could degrade the wood over time. You might be able to avoid that problem if you stuff some insulating material into the ducts. (2) I think there is one other issue you need to consider to assure yourself that you are not incurring a risk of fire: the clearance between the edge of the firebox and the edge of the combustible material. If the latter is too close, it could theoretically catch fire. I do not know how minimum clearances are calculated, or even if there is a general formula for doing that. It depends on how hot the fire gets and how combustible the combustible material is. You might be able to sort this out on your own by making a really good roaring fire, letting it heat up for a good 15-30 minutes, and seeing how hot the vents get, especially the sides of the vents that are closest to the firebox. If they are too hot to touch or almost too hot to touch, then you know that you don't want to put anything combustible like a wood surround that close to the edge of the firebox. But if it gets just slightly warm to the touch, you can probably put a wooden surround that close without any danger of fire. Incidentally, since heat rises, the clearance between the top of the firebox and any combustible material above it will probably be more important to be concerned about. If I were you, I would consider a black metal fireplace surround, to replace the brass surround you have in place now and to extend out so that it covers the vents. Sheet metal fabricators can make one that looks like cast iron (which is too expensive), and that would blend in very nicely with your brick, and you would not have to worry about clearances. You can still get your wooden mantel, positioned one step removed around the metal. Of course, that's a matter of personal taste. You have a really nice fireplace, and with a little careful planning you can make it even nicer. Good luck.

That's just silly. I'm sure you could estimate how long it will be until your dog would weigh enough to need the next higher dosage. I weigh my dogs myself by stepping on the scale, getting my weight, then picking up the dog, stepping on the scale again, and figuring the difference. One of my dogs weighs 45# and I can still pick her up easily. I would talk to the vet and explain the distance you have to travel. Wasting your time is one thing, but depending on the type of car you have, an hour round trip is probably costing you $10 or more in gas! That single pill is really close to $20 when you factor that in. If he still wants the weight monthly, you could call it in and they could mail you the pill for the cost of a postage stamp. If he still refuses, is there another vet in the area?

That's exactly how I would do it (and have done it). I would actually do a white strip with a blue strip on either side. Once you cross-cut it, you'd end up with blue square-white rectangle-blue square. Then you only need additional white rectangles for the opposite sides of your print fabric to make up your 'block'.

No Allan that was ME! LOL Can't believe you remembered that! Go back to www.sialis.org for a refresher course and the timetables. As Kathy points out the only thing you can be sure of when it comes to Bluebirds is that you can't be sure of anything! LOL They don't read the books so the timetables are aproximate. Your BEST guide is refering back to the prior years notes. I have 6 years of notes on the calendars. One year I didnt get an egg till Mothers day, 5 years I got an egg on my birthday 4-26 and this year I got one 4-14 way early. Keep good notes this year, come on in with any questions, comments, pics etc. and study the sialis site. We are here for ya!

Last March (2009), it took Mama Bluebird 13 days to build her nest! This year the same female spent maybe 1-1/2 days to build the basic structure then another 2 days to finish the nest cup. Was the 2009 nest her first? I'm guessing it was.

Both years she laid her first egg a day after =I= thought that the nest cup was ready. In other years, I've had BBs wait a day or so.
