Bird ID!!

I have been trying to get a pic of this bird for a month or so. It looks like a Killdeer except for that yellow!! Can anyone tell me what it is? I can't find it in my bird book. Thanks!! Christy

That is a eastern meadowlark. Black v-necklace is pronounced

Might be an Eastern Phoebe. Looks like it has the "Phoebe smudge" on the sides of its chest & a thin eye ring.

Whitelacey.......this is so funny! I looked out my kitchen window, and on the ground under my suet feeder was a bird that looked just like what you described. Very black head and back with white stripes on the wings, and very white chest and abdomen. Of course, just as I turned to get my camera, it flew off. I should have stayed and observed more instead! As it flew off, it had pretty obvious white wing stripes. My first inclination was a juvenile male towhee.....since we have lots of towhees around. I saw no brown. I'll keep my eye out and my camera close-by........but I immediately thought of you and wondered if, now, I will be driven crazy too. hahaha What caught my eye as it was flying up to a tree was the white on it's wings, which made me think of a red-headed woodpecker. I looked up juvenile redheaded woodpecker and some of the pics looked like it, except mostly in the pics, their heads were grayish. Oh well.....hopefully I'll see it again!

I'll have to listen for it :) It is actually in my book, and I considered a Lark, but I didn't see Meadowlark. Oddly, it looks like an adult breeding (according to my book) which is from Feb to August. But, they've looked like the adult breeding for at least a month, maybe two. That black stripe made me think of the killdeer. They are similar in size and are always on the ground. Skittish like the killdeer and together in small groups poking along the ground. Do they just breed earlier here? I'm not doubting that it is an Eastern Meadowlark, just curious about the breeding time. That black stripe has been prominent for some time. Thoughts?

I see them occasionally in the fields with red-winged black birds.
I don't think you can stick hard and fast to breeding times. I like to think they know what they're doing. :)

It's amazing how yellow they are. You don't realize that until you see them up close. I found one dead along our road. :( so I got to see it real close.

Lots of times the males of a certain bird migrate first.......to stake out their territory/find good locations, etc. Maybe this one was a scout?

Not a scout, there were about 10 of them! This guy just got close enough for me to take a pic. I love the yellow, they're very pretty!!! I really like the redwing blackbirds, too, haven't seen any yet, I'm sure I will soon. I've tried for many years to get goldfinches, 5 year in MD, Miami for 2 (none there, lol!!) and 3 years in NC. I think I finally got some!! I'm gonna keep that thistle feeder full all year, my husband is going to hate that. He can't stand the volunteers :)

christy2828: Congratulations on the meadowlarks, and don't worry about the thistle feeder. The seeds are sterilized so they don't sprout.
