Mike, Don't feel bad at all. She's looking for unvarnished opinions, which is what anyone thinking of starting a small business/consultancy needs. And Leekle, I think you're right that more and more people are moving to natives. Hate to invoke my screen name (chosen years ago) here, but people are also interested in growing food crops. I grow some each winter down here in Miami. And honestly, I'd pay extra to someone who would sell me heirloom tomato plants that are tried and true in Miami. I usually try to start mine from seed, which is easy and has yielded great results in the past. It has also been a complete failure (all seedlings died this year when I had to go away for a weekend while they were little.) So my tomato garden this year was what I could buy at HD. If you had been in my area and had plants ready to put in the ground in early October, plants that were better suited to my conditions than anything HD had to offer, I would have bought them. I would be happy to pay more than HD charges for tomato plants if I could get organically raised Arkansas Traveler, Margo, Sungold or Green Zebra. They grow well here. But that whole seedling phase is difficult for me to do well because I work more than full time and I sometimes have to travel. I've wished there was a way for me to start a tiny business for folks who are physically disabled but have a sunny porch and are able to tend seedlings. The seeds are so cheap, the dirt doesn't cost much, the pots can be recycled things like cut-up soda or water bottles. And it doesn't require heavy lifting. It would require heavy lifting to upscale it, but, like any small business, you could start small. Then there might be opportunities to raise native seedlings in the off-season. I know there are folks here who would share cuttings and seeds with you. Heck, I'll send you tomato seeds from varieties that I tried but don't work well here. They might work better where you are. For pictures of cloches without all our comments, nothing beats the inspiration albums Karen made for us. The problem with the posts on here is that there is no way to keep them from moving on down the line and eventually dropping off, and like Nancy said, when the posts get pic heavy it takes a long time to scroll through them each time to see new additions or comments. I think we determined that the maximum additions/comments on a post is 150--so yes, a post as popular as cloches could get pretty long. Hopefully, Karen has captured some of the prettiest ideas from this post already, so I say go ahead and start a new one for 2011--and when it gets too long, we can always do a part 2, right? ;o) Luvs

I built a compost bin nearby with builder's block from my FIL's old milk house built in 1929. We have a bunch more to collect from eastern Idaho. Lined it with a some newspaper, then a wet phone book someone threw into our trash can next to our shop doors and also a bag full of apples! Must have been my eldest son or my hubby. WE get extra phone books from our neighbors who passes them out in the fall. One thing my son did was have the nerve to take one of the blocks from my compost bin to place under his snowmobile trailer's tongue when he got back. I did go out later at night to get the dog food bag and some more newspaper. Then in the morning, I could have gotten more newspaper, but didn't dare. I wasn't expecting such service. They said they would just dump them anyway. So, I scored big time in the goal of getting other people's mulch and having it delivered. Where is that thread anyway?! I told them they can dump more of their grasses. They weren't done with this big subdivision and they also mow the shared grassy area and little parks. So I told them feel free to dump the grass too! When the grass gets long enough to mow. Plus I got the main guy's card to have him do some pruning and other stuff for me. I think the crew was amazed that this blonde haired lady, driving a ford clubwagon was willing to load it up with all the tall grasses! Let alone talk to them, as some people in this manicured area probably wouldn't bother speaking to them. (even if it was YOU that maintained it!) ...you subconsciously thank all of those hard-working neighbors who painstakingly rake up all of their leaves so you can steal their bags the next morning! ;) ...(this has been said before, but what the heck!)
