We have had white-winged crossbills several times this winter feeding on the cones in our spruce trees. These birds are really cool. They use their crossed bill to pry open the cones and then they extract the meat with their tongues. They are rather sporadic, so having seen them three times since fall is unusual for us. However, we have 50 spruce trees, all with a huge cone crop, so maybe the crossbills discovered a good banquet! Anyway, thought you might enjoy the photos.
