no blues yet!

I keep looking out on that favorite wire everytime I'm in the bathroom, but so far nothing. Never got any last year either, so i guess I'm doomed, Had tree swallows last year, hope I at least get some of them. I've been watching eagles at ustream, they are in Decorah Iowa and there is a bluebird cam there too, they are in Louisana (I think) very interesting. If anyone is interestind, I can try to find the link. there are 4 eggs, ready to hatch any day. The eagle one is down at the monent, but there are 3 babies and it's a great view. They can even zoom in and out.

Stay patient Gibby! This time last year I had nest building going on. I lost a female bluebird last week and even though the male has a new mate...my boxes are totally vacant.

Plenty of Tree Swallows and the blues are around and no HOSP. Things are definately slower here this year. Most likely due to the weather...it's been in the 50's and cloudy most of the week. A little bit of sun but every time it warms up we get rain:(...simply seems too early.

Good luck! Hope you get bluebirds! I know how it feels because I don't know when or if I'll have my blues begin nesting here this year. The boxes are vacant but the interest in them seems seriously low.

My boxes are empty right now too. BUT I have Dees and Blues shopping. I used to live in Iowa ....a very popular place for Eagles...they love the Mississippi.

Nope, no blue ones yet. Grace Stamile has some small ones with "blue" eyezones, etc, and a few other hybridizers are also working on developeing a blue one but no one has succeeded as yet. As for the white ones being slow to increase, I don't think the color has anything to do with the increase. I've got some near whites that increase slowly and some that are prolific and the same goes for other colors. IMO, the garden situation often has lots to do with the amount of increase. Things such as zone, quality of soil, amount of water, amount of shade or sun they receive, etc. I think this is why that particular quality is not put into the description. Jan

yep, I thought they were all Bird of Paradise and I thought it odd that the big plant had no blooms and teh little plants did. I had heard that it can take 4 years for a BOP to bloom, we are new to this house and the plants were already here, but the little ones dont look like they would be 4 yrs old. Then I noticed that the blooms did not have the blue that a Bird of Paradise should have, but was thinking maybe that is a mature part of the flower and I just have to give it time. Then I ran across something called a False Bird of Paradise, They look very similar to a BOP, but are smaller and don't get the blue part of the flower. I started to think maybe none of the plants were a real BOP, but I found a pic from last year and the big plant has the blue and also a real BOP has a thick green bottom petal. I that now that I know why the little plants are in bloom, but the big plant is not is b/c a real BOP just does not bloom until later in the year. These are all outdoor in the ground plants, not in a pot so when I was weeding the flower bed and chopped a bunch of roots... I hope I did not hurt the real BOP plant and that is why it's not blooming.... crossing my fingers it is ok and just been some more time.

"I think there's a real need for someone who can marry an architect's vision for asthetics with a builder's ability to do things affordably" It's called an interior designer with a degree, not the ones who claim to be interior designers who are decorators with a continuing education or trade school, or OJT on where to place a vase. do you really think so? in my experience an interior designer doesn't know much about construction or building economically? i think the other piece missing is incorporating green building - to the extent that you can save money beyond your initial cost outlay especially - and someone who can answer the question as to whether it makes more economic sense to move or add on. Have you ever actually met an interior designer or just someone who told you they were an interior designer? They are required to have many hours in the building construction sciences and budgeting. I don't know where these interior designers you met with 5-year college degrees were that knew nothing, but that is what their business is. I think like most people, you are thinking about an interior decorator, total different kettle of fish.

DON'T give up gibby! There is still LOTS of time for you to get Blues. Remember that a pair of Blues can have 2 or 3 broods per season. I too have been watching the Decorah eagles. The live real-time video is so clear, and it is so much fun to watch them. I think that the youngest eaglet is around 5 days and the oldest is now about 8 days old.
