House Sparrow Claims Box Already

Some of the boxes around here have entrance holes too small for the house sparrows but not all. Last spring I put up a really nice woodpecker house for the smaller woodpeckers. It was ignored by all. Today I am out doing spring cleanup gardening and I see a male House Sparrow has claimed that box. I fist noticed pecking going on inside and then saw him sitting in the entrance hole. After awhile he came out and sat atop the box and then went back inside.

I have one of those nextbox trap boxes sold by the purple martin society. Last year I used it trapping and dispatching some house sparrows that thought they would nest here in my front yard. I have the thing mounted on a moveable pole and just stick it inground really near whatever house the house sparrows try to take. I try to get it set so that it just about blocks entrance to the orinal house. If that doesn't get them to go in I take the orther box down temporarily.

I just thought it was much to early for them to nest. I am surprised to see the nestbox claimed. So I guess if he is there it is not too early for the trap box? I think I will go out and set it up right now but leave it so they can not go in at least until tomorrow so that they get used to it.
