And So it begins! (rats)

The Robins showed up yesterday (right on time). Last 2 years the Blues showed up the same day the Robins did. Thank God the Blues are not here yet. We still have nearly a foot of snow and not many bugs. A pair of HOSPs are checking out a nest box UUUGGG, I will let them get comforatable with it. There is not enough thawed ground to find much nesting material yet and I don't want to scare them off. I cant shoot the 22 in that direction so I will have to trap them ( I hate hate hate doing that) They are looking at the box with the plexi viewing side so conformation will be easy. My Blues have always been here by the 15th...I am glad they are late this year and hope I can get the HOSPs before they arrive. I have taken the Blues favorite box down and re stained it today, also stained the cam box (the TRES like that one). I have the hole reducer ready for the Dees box....just wating till the nights stay above freezing so I don't leave the little Downy roosting in it out in the cold. Ordered 10K medium meal worms yesterday......I think I am ready! I pray we all have a good season!

Hey Lisa! My Robins returned on the 15th also along with the Redwings, yesterday I saw a Grackle too. Blues are usually a week behind here so I am expecting them next week, however they are calling for possible snow next week too. We too have ALOT of snow on the ground yet. Around the bases of the trees you can see grass but everywhere else it is pretty much 1 to 2+ feet deep yet. I have seen the Dees checking out the nestboxes and have had a few HOSP in the yard but they haven't been looking at or near the nestboxes at all yet. Good luck getting your HOSP before the Blues arrive!!

Hillside House...yup, you were the originator on that idea! Partim...sorry, i really wish this forum had numbered post for easier reference. In the black and white floorplan posted above (11/12) is what i was referring to. Basically keep our current stove/oven where it is but take out the 2 walls of the pantry and put the fridge there. Kathi Steele...what "bank of cabients" are you referring to? Which "doorway" are you referring to? Since this remodel has rendered by unable to focus and therefor useless at work, i've been messing around on IKEA's design program today. So basically, this is the new layout i'm talking about with putting the fridge in the current pantry area (the software would not allow me to put a doorway to the right of the fridge shown below):

I haven't taken halloween decorations down, but will today. I only dressed my goose, and put up some orange lights on the bannister. Today I'll dress my goose in his Thanksgiving outfit. I am totally depressed because I didn't get one trick or treater! I bought an 85 piece bag of candy, and not one kid. Last year I got several. I'm not sure why no kids. When my kids trick or treated 15 years ago, the neighborhood was packed. Parents would drive the kids over to the neighborhood because we are on the lake, away from the rest of the town. I guess there are just no kids left in the neighborhood, which is sad, but not sure about the parents not coming over. Maybe no body but me handed out candy last year.

Thanks for the warning bustopher, I have plenty of space. I think it’s Jeri’s that is an 18x18 monster or something like that. I’m planting several ramblers along the edge of the yard this spring. If they get too big there, I’ll move them to the back or other side yard.

Wow! So beautiful! I can’t wait for rose season to come here. Molineaux looks ready to explode! Pretty Jessica is so beautiful. I’m super excited as I got one in a trade last year. It’s still really small, but just sent out a new basil. Hopefully she will look as pretty as your someday! flowersaremusic, as far as I understand it Pretty Jessica is perfect in all areas except that she is an excruciatingly slow grower. Several of the smaller nurseries have stopped producing her for that reason. She just took to long to get to salable size. I tried to buy one several years ago, and couldn’t find any. That’s why I was so excited to get one in a trade!

One down. I am shaking and crying.... I found my traps. Put one out and he was back on the box within minutes. I watched him look in.... (my head was saying dont go in I don't want to kill you) and snap...he was in. The rest is not pretty. There is another male trying to claim the cam box so I am not done....I HATE THIS!

It is a horrible task, but it does need to be done. It makes me feel awful too, but I just keep telling myself that I'd feel even worse if I found my EABL or TRES killed by the HOSP. Wishing you luck getting that other male HOSP before the Blues arrive.
