What should I do?

I have 2 Bluebird boxes. One is empty. Nuthatches were building in the 2nd but there's been no activity there for about 2 weeks and the nest is not completed. Today I have a bluebird pair scouting out the box with the Nuthatch nest inside. Should I pull out the nesting material or hope they go for the empty one?

Renee, I would leave the nuthatch box alone. I had them nesting last year (brown headed) and they are delightful birds to have as guests. My very first nesters years ago were chickadees. They began building in early March when our temps were still a little chilly. Then there was no activity for the longest time and I was certain they had abandoned the nest. Finally, eggs were laid and they raised 4 babies. Your nuthatches will probably return to finish the nest. In the meantime, can you relocate your other bb box to a desirable place further away from the nuthatch box? I am NOT an expert, but someone might advise you to put a hole reducer on the nuthatch box..but I'm really not sure about that.

Renee, I'm not here very much but I stopped by just now and saw your question. I can tell you that nuthatches can take up to 6 weeks to build a nest, doing it in fits and starts. You didn't say which kind of nuthatches they are, but if they are brown headed you can reduce the hole to 1.25". They are such fun to watch and I hope you enjoy them!

There are some photos here... The spores are bright orange, not yellow and very powdery. If you look at the photos you can actually see little raised bumps. Every fall I go bargin hunting at the local nurseries looking for prennials I refuse to pay the full price for and a couple of years ago almost every Daylily they had was covered with rust, so yes nurseries can be a source of rust. If you decide to speay make sure you use a systemic. The first time I had it here I used a contact spray which looked like it was working but the rust kept coming back. I eventually gave up and let it run it's course. I am in Zone 5 so winter kills it. I had it in 2005, 2006, and 2007. I have since changed my buying habits and have not seen it again. I no longer buy from people in the south or areas without the extended cold spells it takes to kill it. If they buy new intros from the south I get them to send my plants out as early as possible to avoid their new plants sending it here. It is unsightly but I cannot say it has actually killed any plants here. I am sure it set some back and they did not preform as well the following years. Leaf streak can look like rust, look for the little RAISED bumps and the orange powdery spores. I was out in the garden this morning and saw 1 case of leaf streak that made me check to make sure that's what it was so even though you have seen rust a quick view of any miscolored leaves tends to make you think about it. I agree with all of you: they're definitely Hollywood Regency. And I should recharacterize my own style, which is probably better said to be "*in* transition" rather than transitional. (: I do like clean-lined pieces, and our DR set is very Mission; the adjacent LR combines Mission and Art Deco; and our bedroom, where these chairs would go, is your basic Recovering Graduate Student/Random Wedding Present room. So funky/eclectic would fit in just fine there. And there's just something about these chairs... The room is a long rectangle. The half without windows is for the bed (not a bed per se, but rather mattresses on a metal frame) and the dressers, which are mismatched yard sale finds. On the other side of the room, I'd like to create a sitting/reading area next to the windows, with a gorgeous view of the mountains (by far the nicest thing about the room!). We got a red and tan handloomed Peruvian folk-art rug for our wedding, and that's what we'll use to set off the seating area. Also on that side of the room, framing one window, are some slender dark walnut modern-styled bookcases. And then the part I'd like to replace: a heinously ugly loveseat that a friend gave us, also on that side of the room. I'd much rather find some reading chairs and an ottoman than a loveseat anyway; the room's not that big, and the loveseat makes it a pain to open and close the curtains and shades. I agree these chairs don't look too comfortable, so they're probably not my ideal reading chairs. But they'd be good for draping the bathrobe or pulling into the LR for extra seating. I love the idea of velvet, and maybe even the box-pleated skirt -- hadn't thought of that, cool idea, thank you! I agree that they're great in a pattern, but I don't want lots of patterns clashing in my bedroom, I don't think. RoundUp (glyphosate, but RoundUp actually does include diquat dibromide as well for a speedier response as glyphosate is not a fast herbicide) deactivates upon soil contact and then decays via bacterial action (bacteria consider it dinner) over some months. I can't find any indication that it has any other rapid decay mechanism (and, in fact, most sources indicate that it's fairly stable in sunlight and very stable in water. Which makes sense; that's why the bottle is white and the listed dilutant is water. Personally, I'd rinse off the rocks (and the hose) with the hose a bit before interacting overmuch with them and I'd probably be hesitant to lick the rocks before a good rainfall. As far as immediate toxicity goes, there's little to no concern. Toxicity is >5,000 mg/kg in rats, which is pretty much going to be the same in humans. You won't be exposed to that much, and that makes it less toxic than table salt. And again, I'll encourage you to research the cancer links on your own. Personally, I consider the evidence fairly weak. Inevitably, somebody out there will come back with, "but I know somebody..." That's too bad...but "anecdote" does not equal "datum."

Brutal but honest. Get your deposit back and run! Was in this position and learned the hard way. Don’t build with big box; build custom custom with a local builder who will accommodate all your needs and build a one story only. Two story’s don’t work when “aging in place”. Big box force you into compromised and design choices that don’t work. Skip the paint and lipstick and focus on layout and flow. When building a “forever home” you need quality over quantity. Our one story has larger hallways to accommodate wheel chairs and walkers. We designed around how you move through a space with ease. We have a big shower and no tub cause as you age, tubs are hard to use. Even the front door has literally one step that can accommodate a ramp as to when or if we get there it can be done. Every bathroom has storage and storage is essential. Bonus space is useless. Only put rooms in the house you will use. Formal anything is garbage and waste to heat and cool. These are all subject to preference but these are lessons learned.

I would be thrilled to have nuthatches using my boxes. Lucky you!! Hope the blues pick the other box :)

I'd keep them too! I was blessed with Caralina Chickadees last year.. and just when I was ready to give up on my Bluebirds, they took the other box on our property!

Do not remove the nuthatch nest. They are native birds and removing or destroying their nest would be against the law. As a native cavity nester, they need a home just as much as the bluebirds.

As a side note, if they are White-breasted Nuthatches, they are the least likely to excavate their own cavity, compared to Pygmy, Brown-headed and Red-breasted Nuthatches. Thus, like the bluebirds, they are more of a secondary-cavity nester, relying on natural cavities or those created by other birds such as woodpeckers.

There was no need to worry. The Bluebirds picked the other box. From the looks of the nest they have been quite busy today. The nest look almost complete. I had 3 nestings in that box last year. Ill keep my eyes open for the Nuthatches to return. They are Brown-headed by the way.
