Hey ladies, nothing happening here! but i'm here!

I am in CA during the school year.Things are slow in OH.I check with my husband who spends most of his time in OH to see if there is any BB activity.We have 4 nest boxes.One of them has pine needles.The others have grass.He keeps busy pulling out the grass on a daily basis.He says "there are so many birds flying around.I can't tell who is who".I will be going there next week for 2 weeks.I will be trapping and eleminating the HSPs so that the BBs are safe.

HEY Anita!!!!!& Donna!!!!! I feel loved again LOL! Anybody heard from Harold? Jany May? I know Malinda and Bet are busy but we can always reach them. Anita is there anybody left from the "old days"? Where the heck is everybody? This is wierd!

Hopefully everyboby is still around. It's just that here in Tennessee we are off to a slow start. By this time last year we had eggs down and spookers up in several of our houses. I've seen plenty of blues checking my houses out so far this year. However, when we checked today we found only the beginnings of nests in 5 houses, and nothing in the others. Is everybody else off to a slow start?

I guess I'm from the 'old days.' I've had a nest box camera in a box since 2004 and spent some years here venting about the house wrens that have several times tossed both bluebird chicks and chickadee out of their nests. I've had to keep a close eye on the video so that if the chicks got thrown out, I could get them back in the box.

Last year I had only one brood of bluebirds here with only 2 surviving chicks and then the bluebirds went elsewhere. At the estimated time that it'd take them to have another brood of chicks, Daddy Blue brought 4 or 5 fledglings to my mealie feeder here so at least I saw them.

The bluebirds this year aren't doing anything! They come here to eat when I put out the mealworms but I suspect they are building a nest somewhere else.

It's hard to keep my bluebird enthusiasm when they choose not to raise their broods under my watchful eyes.

These posts give me hope that it's not too late. I need to get rid of some sparrows, fast, so the blues will hopefully reconsider my boxes! For the first time in my life, I'm considering getting a BB gun! I can't believe how far I've come: farming mealworms and looking into guns...Life used to be so uncomplicated!

I'm here too, Lisa. Just waiting for some action. Blues are checking out boxes but things have slowed a bit as our weather turned chilly (and WET) again. Got my van stuck in the mud yesterday when I was attempting some maintenance on one of the trails-had to be hauled out by a tow truck! Anyway, I'm here!

Sounds like most of us are having a rough start. Yesterday a titmouse put some moss into the bluebird box (w. the video cam inside). The blues have been around but only to eat the mealies I have been putting out.

Anyway, I was shocked to see both Mama and Daddy Blue go in and take OUT the moss! They made 2 trips each last night. This morning they did the same thing. The titmouse came back and looked around as if to say 'what the frak?'

We shall see. We will finally have 'normal' weather for us this week which is really late. Better late than never.

I don't know if that means we WILL have a nest or not but I do hope so.

My female has three eggs in the nest. As soon as she laid the first egg she began spending a lot of time in the nestbox (actually she stays in the opening, halfway out of the box) and last night and again tonight she is staying in the nestbox over night. I have a nest cam and I can see her but I can also see two of the eggs, so she is not down on them. It almost seems like she is guarding them. In the past six nestings she has laid 5 eggs every time so this is very strange indeed.

Very warm here today (near 80 during the day and still 69 degrees at midnight), so if she HAS begun incubating she just didn't need to be down on the eggs all the time. She laid the third egg after staying overnight in the box so it will be interesting to see if there is a fourth egg tomorrow.

Pretty hard to mark your calendar under these circumstances.
