got em!!!!

Well yesterday morning my blues were battleing HOSP over the box they'd go into the woods and the HOSP would go to the box and here they'd come and chase them off so my son and I got the BB gun and sat out on our patio and we got 3 HOSP yesterday, but in the evening I spotted two white cats hanging out in the woods so I got my dog and let her out to chase them off I hope I don't have to contend with these stray cats.

Well I have more HOSP I swear my blues are not giving up they defend their box like crazy, I keep waiting for them to build their nest so I can get my sparrow spooker attached...I don't want to scare them away. I'm not having any luck trapping the HOSP so I'll continue with the gun.

Good luck with the battle. I swear there are more HOSP this year than I've ever seen before. I think a lot of Bluebirders are in for a lot of work.

Hi Deep Roots I am in the Bay Area and have been growing favas for the past 6 years. They do remarkable all winter, don't they? My stalks are about 6 feet, so yours will keep going! Although some people say they pick early and use the beans right out of the pod, mine always slip out of the second skin after cooking, whether or not they are big or small, young or old. Since they are so much work for so little in return, I wait until they are very big, bulging out of the pods, and then pick them. You need to pod them and then blanch them to get them out of the second skin. Once you do, they don't need much. I salt them and my three year old eats 'em right up. You can throw them in salad or pasta. I mashed them roughly and had them with some feta smeared on a baguette. Very tasty. I did have the leaves of the fava in a salad at a restaurant the other night, and they were good. I will have to look for some healthy clean leaves and try that myself. Have fun!

I USUALLY can't rear many from eggs, because I have NO foodplants by me, so I sometimes sell the eggs and use that money to buy more cocoons for the following year. I can't ignore it when I read my own manual. In the safety section it says don't put this phone within one inch of your body. I had no idea a phone could be dangerous. I carried it 3 1/2 years in my pocket as a life line in case I needed help. Then I lost a kidney to cancer. The kidney under the pocket where I carried a phone. I had a warning, I felt the vibration of the phone when it wasn't even in my pocket. A friend of mine had the warning and she stopped carrying her phone in her pocket. If women carry their cells in their purse they are not even suppose to put their purse in their lap. I know that no one believes until it is to late otherwise they would have to give up their $500 toy. Before anyone asks I did not bookmark the site but it was an official looking site that dealt with all electronic emissions. Also I met a young clerk at BB who was so excited because he and his wife had just adopted a baby. I looked at him and said you can't have kids can you. He said no, how did you know? I just asked him how long he had carried the cell phone in is pocket. He said since they came and were the big ones.

I got mine tonight and yes the population has increased as I had one male escape the trap last year. I know he had a mate and at least 2 broods. So far it's 2 Males down. I am happy to report the 22 with the bird shot pellets worked great! DeeDee shooting them is so much easier.
I think I will have to single handedly take out this population, they are new here, never had them till a couple years ago. So many natural cavities and farmers around....Got to keep on them!

It takes an army to fight these HOSP! Glad to know I'm amongst bluebirders who will do what they have to to keep our loving species thriving.
I have not had problems with HOSP here where I live in Maine. One year I noticed them at my bird feeder. I immediatly took the feeder down. Now I only feed thistle to my small song birds and nectar to the humming birds. Seems to work out okay so far.
Mockingbirds were a problem last year where I was feeding mealworms to my blues. They monopolized the feeder. I moved the dish and it worked for a while. I am hoping that they won't come back this year.

You are lucky MaineBlues. I had so many HOSP this winter that some of them even ate from my thistle feeder. I have never had that happen before. I have managed to dispatch 9 HOSP so far, and the Van Erts are ready if any of them claim one of my boxes.
